Forums - Nintendo - Will the Wii ever get a decent WRPG title?

My point is things change especially with regard to who makes what and for what system.

My point is that water is wet.

I don't see why not. HVS said they could do an RPG and Conduit looks nice.

Yes, Conduit looks nice but how does that relate to HVS making a decent WRPG? It might very well be horrible, shooters and RPG's are quite different. Do you think only about visuals?

Do you think HVS only makes shooters?

They've had years paying their dues in a variety of games. They weren't large scale, but HVS got good with publishers for making the games on time and under budget. So HVS didn't really have AAA FPS experience before The Conduit, but they evidently know how.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

That remains to be seen (whether the game is actually AAA). And like I said; there are no guarantees, even of the same genres, I feel like reminding the boards of the atrocity that is Haze, made by the otherwise brilliant Free Radical.

Edit; I just checked some of HVS games and they're... not exactly brilliant by most measures, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (which I didn't even know was released and which recieved extremely low review scores all over), Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (which recieved very low scores across the board) and Leisure Suit Larry which is simply atrocius (and also recieved low scores with an average of just above 60%). Hardly the signs of a solid AAA developer if you ask me, so the dues they've paid are of little worth.

I do think The Conduit can be quite good but there really isn't too much reason to believe it will be AAA (I've seen most of the videos and read many previews, it looks and sounds rather average to be honest). So; no, I don't think we'll be seeing a quality WRPG from HVS on the Wii any time soon (or perhaps ever) and I don't understand why anyone would see that as even remotely likely.

The will will eventually have one, but:

- 2010 - 2011: release
- Not made from a well known developer(i.e.: Boiware, Bethseda, Blizzard, Black Isle)
- "Seeking Publisher" agonizing cruzade.

It's always great to get an informed opinion from someone who doesn't realize Black Isle closed over half a decade ago.

WRPG's are a strong genre on the consoles with Xbox 360 seeing strong sales of such games like Fable, Mass Effect , Oblivion and Fallout 3 with last two appearing on the Playstation 3 as well.

I know that WRPG's were dominating on the PC's in the past but now they are as successful (or maybe even more succesful on the home consoles) when ported on those platforms.

As we know 3rd party support for the Wii increases every month with some good titles coming mainly from Japanese Devs, there are plenty of JRPG's for example coming this year (which i also like a lot). While Western support still could be much better, we see a signs of improvement(EA recent statements for example).

My question is that will the increased third party support on Nintendo console bring some Western RPG's on the console, a type of game completely absent from Wii library, do you think there is a chance ?

WRPGs are nowhere near as successful on consoles as they are on PC. The fact that PC has probably much more million-selling WRPGs than all consoles combined this gen is a proof of that.

There are several problems with the Wii that hurts the choice of getting ports. First is that Wii isn't technologically similar to PC - It's a very old and weak tech, so developers would probably have a harder time to port to Wii than the Xbox 360, for example.
And second, WRPGs usually have more complex mechanics and "hardcore" gameplay while the Wii is perceived as a "casual system".

Perhaps they don't think of Overlord as a WRPG? I know I don't, its an action-adventure/strategy game and contains very few roleplaying elements.
