Bubble Bobble is amazing on C-64. It's by far the best version of the game ever made.

i remeber fondly during the school 6 weeks holidays. me and next door neibour played bubble bobble from 8 am till evening almost everyday.

in fact i still have in memory how to complete everystage in 2 player.

I am in same situation as the op. I never played any C64 games and didn't even hear about the system till it was long gone. I was too busy playing 2600 and NES... I'll have to try a few of the top games.

Few C64 games can truly stand the test of time, and it's quite obvious that graphics have nothing to do with it. Some great games have already been mentioned, so I'll just throw in my 2 cents, shamelessly repeating when necessary.

Internation Karate +
Ultima IV
Maniac Mansion
Paradroid
Monty on the Run & Auf Wiedersehen Monty (for the soundtrack)
The Great Giana Sisters (I know it's a Mario rip-off, but it's good anyway)
Wasteland
Stunt car Racer (one of, if not the best racing game ever)
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (most probably the MOST RIDICULOUSLY DIFFICULT GAME EVER)

It's kind of sad how he has fallen...:(

Many of the best C64 games had remakes on the DOS PC (Ultima, Archon, Lode Runner, etc.), and some can still be downloaded via various abandonware sites and played on a DOS emulator. Lemme tell ya though, those games are awful to look at in this day and age, despite the fond memories.

Unfortunately, the days of bedroom coders are long gone. It's hard to believe games like Uridium were the work of two people...

Revenge of the Mutant Camels and Archon 1, 2, and 3 are all good!

GiJoe... was a blast. I don't want to see that game today...hell no
