Forums - General - What do you think about being able to reelect a president unlimited times?

I disagree with it. It leads to dictatorships in which Chavez will take advantage of.

I know a lot of private TV station suck and some try to lie to the people but aren't you supposed to choose what you want to watch?

And don't you find dictatorish (I think I just made that word) that foreign people are expelled just because they say something bad about the government? Even people from HRW?

No, I agree that some of his moves are unfortunate and nefarious. In that thread, I said his 2007 referendum was essentially a ploy to establish himself as a de facto dictator. He wanted the power to declare an indefinite state of emergency without the possibility of judicial review...yeah, that is quite worrisome. Also, the decision not to renew RCTV's radio license in 2007 was unfortunate. Nonetheless, he accepted the defeat of the referendum relatively gracefully. That highlights, in my opinion, the enigmatic nature of Chavez.

He accepted his defeat very peacefully although he called it "a victory of shit" on public TV, but you have to remember that he still had 5 years left from his 2nd term,he still had time to pursue unlimited reelections by other means, he did it and now he's able to run as many times he wants...

I understand your concern. As you can attest from this thread and the discussion you and I had, I am not a Chavez apologist. With that being said, I also tend not to overreact to an event. This referendum was not the same power grab as the 2007 referendum. Does it increase the possibility that Chavez may abuse his power? Yes, I think it does. Does it grant him the absolute power the leaders you mentioned enjoy? No, it does not.

I don't live there or follow Venezuelan politics, but just at a glance it seems very worrisome to see him smarten up after a blatant power grab and start grabbing it in smaller pieces.  Combined with his apparent (from this or MrBubbles' thread?) use of state media to promote his own side of the issue, it seems to be a good strategy for him, and bad for democracy in Venezuela.

Isn't Castro the elected President of Cuba? How long until Chavez outlaws anyone running against him like Castro?

Saddam Hussein was elected with 99.9% of the vote his last election. Not sure if the .1% was brave, stupid, or just dead.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

exactly. As president, you can make it so that its illegal to be something other than say, Communist. Or you can make it really REALLY hard for non-party members to vote.

Or you can scare the populus into voting for you, OR ELSE.

Anyways, most evil dictators in history were popularly elected.

Chavez is just another dictator.

His early attempts at a military coup d'etat didn't work, so he went for plan b).

If he gave a shit about Venezuela he wouldn't have involved himself in a campaigning endeavour, but instead focused on the ever-dwindling value of oil which is gonna throw Venezuela into a horrible economic disaster mid-to-late 2009. That's why he wanted the referendum to take place as soon as possible.
