Forums - Sony - Hard Drive Upgrade

I've been thinking about upgrading mines, but how can I transfer the files from my old HDD to the new one?

Google it, but I think you'll need a USB enclosure and a PC.

I too am going to upgrade my PS3 HD to a 500gb SATA drive.

One question - I read somewhere you need to keep your old drive with all your old files if you ever need to ship it back to Sony. True or false? Anyone with first-hand experience?

@madskillz - thats true

@OP go with 320GB or 500GB Western Digital, its the only way to go.

yeah i did mean as soon as i got my ps3 cause i knew with all the installs and demos i would fill it up

get a good screwdriver if u can find one use a flat head one it won't strip the screws

another promb u might run into is i don't think u can transfer game saves that have a copyright protection on them thats Y i did mine so early i did want games that i would beat not be able to transfer over to the new HDD

 You can if you use the backup feature,  you just need an USB flash drive or a memory card.

i never tried the backup feature but i have tried simply shoving a usb flash into the usb drive then went to the game save that had a copyright protection hit copy to usb thumb drive and it wouldnt copy over

would copyrighted games saves copy when u go through the system settings and do a back up? never tried it

Yes the backup feature will copy all gamesaves, copyright protection or not.  It how I did it when i swapped my HDD out for the 320GB.  I had my PS3 for a year before I did it.  You just have to get rid of all downloaded demos & PSN games, cause it will try and back those up as well and make the backup file huge.  It will also backup pictures and movies but those dont make the backup file too big.
