Forums - Sony - The reason you love Sony?

ZenfoldorVGI said:
Most people here and on the internet love sony because the PS1/2 was their first console. They are kids. Most people on the Internet are jobless kids or early 20s people. They have no jobs, and thus, can afford to play on the Internet all day.

That is why sony fanboyism is so prevelant on the internet. Sony and core internet forumgoers, have the same market segment. Tweens.

Now, occasionally you'll find a Sony fanboy that started playing games at NES, just as you'll find nintendo fanboys who started playing during the PS2 era. Flukes. Whatever company introduced and made you love gaming is the one you are a fanboy of, and you always shall be. It's called fate.

please don't speak up for others dude. You're making Clive look bad

All I want to say is this: They've allowed developers to put awesome games on their CD based systems.

However, Sony didn't make anything special other than that. I wished people would stop praising Sony for the PlayStation 2. As far as I know, Sony didn't make any "amazing" game for the system at the time it was out. It's the first party developers like Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games that made their name so recognized in the gaming industry.

What did Sony even develop? The Legend of Dragoon? That's all I can remember from them.

How is buying and employing first party developers different then employing people to make games for you (Miyamoto)?  If that's the argument to Sony not being able to count those games as their own achievement then why does Nintendo get to count everything that Miyamoto made?

Because Sony is the only company in this industry truly investing to make video games a valid artform.

Team ICO have an unlimited budget despite not making commercially successful games. Flower, Flow, MGS, LBP, and others, they make, sponsor and promote games with artistic sensibilities rather than just trying to cash in on the less sophisticated mainstream market.

They are willing to lose money on their consoles and their games (Team ico and others) to elevate the industry. Nintendo is doing the opposite by giving the perception of the industry being a toy, rather than a valid form of social, political or artistic expression/commentary.

I agree with some of this in a different way.  The Biggest reason I like Sony is they have provided innovation into the industry and have from day one.   I don't mean with just consoles either.  Electronics in general,  Sony is a breeding ground for innovative new things.

Sony is far from perfect (I went through 2 PS2's, etc), Their prices are almost always too high, generally I have had horrible lifespans with their electronics  but I like that they are always in the forefront of innovating new game IP's,  new hardware innovations, and are almost always the first company to come out and stand on a limb with them.

A lot of people make a big stink about them losing some of their exclusive games (But here's  the reason why I haven't been concerned).  Sony develops new, great IP's, constantly.  (Which is a way to keep ongoing success IMHO).

When I think about all of the game franchises that had Sony roots,  It's impressive.

Games like Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Guitar Hero, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Time Splitters, Grand Theft Auto (I know it wasn't rooted in Sony but it certainly gained popularity and was given the carte blanche to do what they pleased and it resulted in a cult phenomenon.   The list goes on and on too.  (Twisted Metal, God of War, Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, Uncharted, Resistance, To a lesser extent, Kill Zone(Early yet), WipeOut, Warhawk and many others.

Sony also breaks away from that tired trend/mold that the other companies are too often stuck in. Don't get me wrong Sony has it's negatives and these other companies have their positives.  But for me this is why Sony is better in a nutshell.

Nintendo is all about the kids or games that kids/casuals can play.   What makes Nintendo great is they have always managed to make older, more mature gamers enjoy their casual games.  My problem with Nintendo is that far too often they won't make ANY games for their more mature crowd  and IF they do make these more mature games they are almost always dumbed down.    (I know there is a few examples of actual violent games..RE4, etc, but not many and certainly far,far less than Sony/Microsoft).

Microsoft is all about the games that they can sell or market for mass appeal.  Microsoft is the type of company that has done their research.  They know the average age/sex/gaming desire of 90% of their potential buyers.   As such,  they know who and what to appeal to primarily and design many games around this.  (Generally, their more successful games).   Microsoft isn't just a shooter system(So I don't want to place it into that stigma) but it certainly deviates much closer to the stereotypes of what their owners or potential owners will stereotypically or 'statistically' enjoy.

What I like about Sony,  is they provide almost all of the avenues of maturity that Microsoft provides but also make a good run at the casual side that Nintendo provides as well.  Then on top of all of that.  Sony provides games that are truly impossible to categorize (Like Flow, Flower, etc) but provide 'something' else into a stale industry.     I'm not some artistic person by any means,   but Sony brings variety and innovation IMHO.

Microsoft has a lot of potential I think and certainly might knock Sony off of their horse.   However, my concern with this is that Microsoft to me hasn't shown enough innovation as it relates to original games (Beyond Halo and to a lesser extent Gears).  They have gotten older Playstation franchise exclusives put on their system (Which is a great move for them) but their first party development is very barren IMHO.   So what happens when the Halo/Ex-PS exclusives well runs dry?   We'll have to wait and see if Microsoft can pull some rabbits out.

I can't believe what I just read. I don't know about you but God of War, Twisted Metal, Syphon Filter, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Patapon, Loco Roco, Gran Turismo and Uncharted certainly count as major contributions to "core" gaming to me.

Haha, wow. It shows that I don't know much about Sony's intern development teams. Still, I never said anything about Sony not publishing good games and stuff.

I just find it silly when people keep saying "OMG, Sony brought all the good games! Remember Final Fantasy VII? Remember [insert game not made by Sony here]?" Praise the developers, not the hardware makers.

Look, all I want to say is that I barely own any 1st party Sony game. Sony didn't bring the gold, they allowed developers to bring theirs to their system. That's what Sony should be praised for. Other than that, I don't know.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

im going to quote my friend blackstar
"Sony gave us the PS and the PS2 ! so your hate for sony is unjustified.

So Roma plz just understand your talking about a generation that woke up as a kid back in 1996 to play RidgeRacer or Tekken with his friend or family
your talking about that same generation that witnessed one of the most amazing RPGs ever made today !! on the PS which is Final Fantasy 7
your talking about that same generation that would eagerly want to come home from mid/high school to continue where they left off in MGS

thats reason enough to love sony

I like what sony did in the video game industry because they make good hardware (I don't talk about reliability)
PS1 brought CDs to video games.
PS2 was the first dvd player at home for many. It could have a hard drive and a network adapter, had USB ports for cameras, guitars, mics...
PS3 is a real full media center (internet, movies, music, photos, TV...).

I think they make video games systems evolve into something else that I like, more living room center.

Add that I can play any kind of games on these systems, first or third party (who cares if not you?).

Edit:(Oh and since it seems to matter in this thread, I was a PC gamer when I was a kid and when I got my PS2, first console, I already had a job... crazy I have to write that... Just like if no nintendo fanboy grew up with a NES or SNES or gameboy or DS in his hands... ridiculous)

lol why not love the creator instead? I mean if it wasn’t on PS it would have been on another system, its not like the game would disappear.

@SHMUPGurus

I simply believe in giving credit where credit is due. Thanking Sony for Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy VII is as absurd as dismissing their first party development. I agree that we should thank game developers and not hardware manufacturers.
