For the sake of the discussion I'm going to split this into two parts, first the substance of her speech and second her age. Try to seperate the two issues in your replies for clarity (especially since someone's age really shouldn't effect the validity of their points). As this can be a contentious issue I'd ask folks to make an extra effort to remain civil and respectful to the views of others.
My take on the video: Well made points especially the point about responsibility not overriding someone else's rights, but the underlying point of the debate is still "When is it another person?" and there is simply no clear cut answer. My take is that if we aren't sure we should err on the side of caution, but I personally draw the line at the start of brain waves because it is an objective line in the sand and the mind is "a", if not "the" only, major factor in the conscious identity of a human being. If it has a functioning human brain, even in early development, I have a hard time seeing how it could be anything but human.
My take on the age issue: Twelve is a bit young in general for this topic, but if she is as bright as she appears to be and she wrote it herself I've got no issue with it at 12. On the other hand if someone wrote it and had her read it I do have a real problem with it. Kids shouldn't be exploited for adults to express their opinions through an innocent face, but kids who legitimately "get" the issues shouldn't be precluded from the discussion either, particularly when they're capable of actually adding a thoughtful and substantive position to the discussion....unlike many of the supposed adults on both sides of the issue.
Without proof one way or another on whether or not it is really her thoughts and choices behind this I'll leave the question open, but I'm certainly suspicious of it and I'd hope I'm not alone on that.
