The atmostphere was ok, but nowhere near as good as the early Silent Hill games or the Fatal Frame series

i still put the original silent hill as the number 1 scary game

to this day i have trouble playing that game do to the fact i have memories of the nightmares it gave me

"then again i made the mistake of getting the game in early spring when i was 14 and playing it on a foggy morning and threw the night

the fog never left and by the time i got to fighting cybil in the amusement park i swear i could see babies moving outside my window

i still get goosebumps when i hear the opening song

The so called scary games fail to be scary because they just concentrate on the cosmetics, on showing you zombies and blood, as if that would scare the player.

Gameplay is what makes a game scary, your fear as a player to die and loose your progress. That should be the core of scary games, then put all the other terror movie things on top if you want. If developers just put bloody zombies, bazookas and savegames every 10 minutes, thats just gonna disgust your grandma when she passes by the tv, but not scare you.

Siren and Project Zero were pretty scary IMO!

But well, I think that resistance 2 is scary too so ...

play silent hill--its graphics are pretty old but that game set teh mood so well you have hairs in places you didnt think possiable sticking up on end

That must be between Silent Hill 1 and some PC game I never played back in the 90s....

Fatal Frame series is the scariest IMO.

Maybe you will find this weird, but I was constantly scared as an Alien in the first Alien vs Predator game. I mean, you could die very fast. It did feel like I was some kind of an animal, constantly in tension, having to sneak and kill or run and bite precisely to kill before the enemy got to his senses and fired at me.
You're like a scared rabbit, only deadly.
O, and when playing as marine, the first encounter with a face huger = big frikin' scare.
