Forums - Gaming - Poll: HD vs Wii *RESULTS*

I think the fact that the majority of people on this site voted that LBP would sell better than Gears 2 shows how reliable a poll, even on VGC, is.

ummmmmmm i asked who owned the Wii vs HD consoles....... how is your example even remotley valid?

I think you misunderstand the difference between a scientific study and an informal poll.

Oh, what does that mean? I just thought one shouldn't make conclusions off an "informal poll" (which is kinda done in the OP).

You can draw a conclusion from any poll.  For example, if I ask 10 people whether they prefer chocolate or vanilla ice cream and 9 say chocolate, then I can draw the conclusion that of those 10 more prefer chocolate.  What I cannot do is generalize this to the entire world saying "most people prefer chocolate ice cream."

I see the OP as drawing a conclusion more along the lines of the former though rereading it I see how it sounds like the latter.

I think there was an implied generalisation. From the OP:

"And from this poll i can conclude that the Dev's are wrong about the wii and its used base"

From this poll, we can only conclude about the userbase of the Wii on these forums. Even then, only from a few. 'Developers' wouldn't make decisions based informal polls such as this and to claim that 'they' are wrong you would have to assume that your data can be generalised.

the keywords here are "i can conclude" and the Dev's are the ones that are generizing... this poll just proves eventhough this is not a concrete scientific 100% poll... they are wrong to say that the the Wii is a childs toy.

I'm sorry, but that simply makes no sense. Saying 'I can conclude' here is no different than saying 'In conclusion' or 'one may conclude'. It's a matter of making such a broad generalisation from such limited and informal data.

Regardless, it's a generalisation you're making. I'm not refuting the fact that some developers may be generalising themselves, but that doesn't validate your point. The only thing that this poll proves is the ownership of HD consoles vs. Wii consoles of 97 people on these forums. You may be able to generalise your results to the entire forums of vgchartz (may be stretching a bit there too), but any further is just foolhardy.

No, no. You misunderstand. I don't believe that you are doing so.

What I am saying is that you conclusion is invalid. Although your conclusion may be correct, you simply cannot draw it from the data that you have collected.

Well i have fixed the op a little while ago, i just wanted to see what you were implying :P and by this poll i can PERSONALLY conclude that: Dev's are wrong by generizing the Wii as a kids toy.

This forum is wii-leaning. The Wii/HD ratio might be about 1:1, but a far higher percentage of HD owners go around the internet and post in forums. Try doing it in gamespot, or such and such.

This forum is so wii-leaning that it was voted that LittleBigPlanet would sell more lifetime than Wii Music, Animal Crossing, Gears of War 2, Fable 2 and Resistance 2.

Signature goes here!

I still think its interesting that the deviation is only 2.1 percent from worldwide numbers. Of course, this simple poll may not "prove" anything, but perhaps this could warrant enough interest to do a more extensive study. Perhaps on what specialized internet gaming environments can most accurately simulate a random world sample and why.
