Forums - Gaming - Rumor: The Sony switch to Intel's Larrabee chip

Why would Sony throw away all that R&D they poured into the CELL?

It's expandable architecture. Unless it's proving to be woefully inefficient, they're going to stick with it.

well the cell has a powerPC base and its from IBM.... they have had issues in the past scaling the chips in a timely manor to customer requests or getting production costs under control as requested. Normally the production costs is an issue with viable chips off die, especially with the die shrinks, with whole quarters worth of productions being bad or not coming close to estimated yields. So maybe sony is hedging their bets that the cell will not be able to run its own FX next generation. that would require a new GPU and if the current one they dont feel is working they need to start early to find one that can emulate the old chip and bring the power they need to the new one.

though all of that rides on the idea sony is unhappy with cost per unit, and want s to go with original plans of using the cell for the gpu in the next console
