What about in Grand Theft Auto IV.

When you're in a car chase and you change the view so that you see from the cop's eyes. I would post a video but, sadly, I'm posting from my phone.

I always thought side-scrollers are second person.

I believe they are 3rd person, but I don't know because 2D sidescrollers don't really have a perspective do they, and if they do they would all be 3rd right?

Isn't it true that 1st and 2nd person perspective HAVE to be in a 3D realm for that to even make sense. 3rd person is the only one that can be both 2D and 3D right?

Yea, you make a fair point about 1st and 2nd person have to be in 3D, but thats mainly because our world is in 3D. I don't think we can perceive how a 2D world would look like for someone living in a 2D world (not that there is a 2D creature, but interesting to think about nonetheless).

Games are refered to as 1st, 2nd or 3rd person in reference to the literary story telling devices of 1st, 2nd and 3rd person perspective.

In literature:

1st person is where we are having the story given to us by a narrator. We will often hear his thoughts narrated also. We are meant to be seeing the world from this character's perspective, but we still recognise that he is a different person.

2nd person literature is written with the reader as the main character, it's pretty rare tbh. I would describe Wii Sports, Kinect Adventures and other games that use avatars instead of characters as 2nd person games

3rd person we are having the story described to us as if we were a fly on the wall watching events unfold.

I have some noob questions :

1- What do we mean when we say 1st person shooter and 3rd person shooter ?

2- why there is only 1st and 3rd person shooter and no 2nd ?

You referring to what they did in a boss level like in Battletoads? (ack, someone beat me to it with Battletoads).

A reason why, I guess, is that it wouldn't work well for a prolonged period of time.

2nd person in a video game would be like 2nd in literature, very rare and very tricky. Wkipedia was a good description of 2nd person applied to literature:

Probably the rarest mode is the second-person narrative mode, in which the narrator refers to the focal character(s) as "you", therefore making the audience feel as if they are characters within the story. Because of this, second-person pieces often have an accusatory nature with the narrator often condemning or expressing powerful emotions directly at the person whom they are referring to. A small number of novels have been written in the second-person, frequently paired with the present tense.

There are a few examples in litereature but not books people are generally familiar with. Motivational and instructional books sometimes use 2nd person "you need to get off your fat butt and exercise". Interactive children's books often use 2nd person.

One game that comes to mind as using 2nd person is Wii Fit when sometimes you see the game through the eyes of the instructor, as for example when you do the balance exercise and the figure on the screen becomes "you" because you are controlling the red center of gravity dot. When the figure is just demonstrating how the exercise should be done but in no way controlled by the gamer, it would not be 2nd person even though seen through the instructors eyes.

Didn't Half-Life have a second-person narrative approach towards the game?

a 2nd person shooter makes no sense, you watch from your enemies perspective as you shoot them, that would be really awkward to aim.

Siren blood curse, is the only game i know that uses 2nd person in any meaningfull way.

In this game with some of the playable characters you can choose to have a split screen effect where half the screen is seeing out of the zombies eyes. So for example when your hiding in a cupboard you can use this ability to look out of the nearest zombies eyes in splitscreen to see when he has passed your hiding place.

You can even attack the zombies in this split screen mode, so you effectivley get first person and second person views at the same time. :)

There are 2nd person cameras in some games including FPS games. Some replay data allows you to see your opponent's POV as they're scoring a kill on you, etc. Some have a respawn burn time that also allow you to see the action from another player's perspective.

The main thing is 2nd person perspective means you are now the observer, seeing action through another player's POV rather than the controller.

It's also possible to do a 2nd person narrative cut scene, seeing the action, not necessarily through another player's perspective, but through the perspective of a NPC as they are looking at or interacting with your character.

As a play mechanic, it would have to remain a passive play mode ("observer mode") as the instant you were able to assume control of the NPC or other character while viewing the action through their perspective, you would in effect become that second person, making the game a first person perspective game once again.

One of the rare examples of 2nd person perspective used as a play mechanic and definitely one of the best.

It can be done, but it's definitely unusual due to the limited applications.
