The original xbox sold about 16 million units in NA in its short life of 4 years. The Xbox360 passed 16 million in NA 3 weeks ago in 3 years.

Now The Xbox360 passed the Xbox in every major region on the planet.

• Xbox: 7.7 million

Japan:

• Xbox360: 910k
• Xbox 447k

NA as mentioned:

• Xbox360: 16.22 million
• Xbox: 16 million

The Xbox360 is doing a great job so far. It is a great success for MS compared to the last generation. The brand gets bigger and bigger and it is finally established in Europe. 3.4 million consoles  more than in the previous gen in a 12 months shorter time frame is great. In Japan it will surpass 1 million in 2 months. One million is still not huge but it is great for a western console to achieve that.

NA was and is by far the best market for the Xbox but the Xbox360 is getting stronger and stronger in the home market. In the western markets the Xbox360 is leading by 10 million units against the PS3.

Congrats, emdollarsign. See what happens when you actually care about the customer? Now the only reason you haven't sold even better was for RRoD. 

Imagine what it could have sold if RROD didnt come about

The 360's success is deserved because MS is fully supporting their console this generation. They have been wooing every major developers into getting exclusive games or at least, make playstation's exclusive games a multiplatform game. Unfortunately, all these efforts in Japan still is not paying off.
