Can actually control sub units which is especially useful for when you want to use their special "Y" ability. Just select the big group typically by selecting local group and then using the Right trigger you can cyle between the units. Hope that makes sense but basically if you have a group consisting of multiple units you can select each individual unit within that group using the right trigger. You can cycle throuh the different units that way. Is not perfect by all means and it is still hard to select a group to do things for you but eveyone has the same controls and issues so just have to make it work the best way you can. The more I play it the better I am getting at controlling and doing things the way I want.
