The thing I don't get is why an average of 88.4% gets rounded down to 8/10.
Clearly I'm not the only one who doesn't get this, according to the comments.

Nope, not blind at all.....look at the scores per category they gave....using a 100 point scale. They then calulated the final score on a 10 point scale with no rounding. Metacritc uses a 100 point scale.....so to do it CORRECTLY....they need to use the score value based on the 100 point scale values.....not the 10 point scale.....otherwise the value is flat out wrong.
omg its the appocalypse coming, how could killzone 2 get an 8/10. i got my torch, but lost my pitchfork anyone got a spare.
Let it go, I don't think this game needs defending anymore. It's the real thing we were hoping for And i cant wait to play it.

it all depends on which of the subcatagories have the most relative value

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.
What is there not to understand? They gave it an 8/10 and that's what Metacritic posts. Metacritic does not monkey around with how they review games or how they weight different catagories, they simply convert the final score to a 100 point score (which is the way it should be).
It's not that hard.

IGN has been doing this for J man knows how long.
They could give every category a 7 and give a final score of eight because the sum is better than the parts.
The final score just indicates how all the categories come together and give you a full experience.

True.....there is no way to know if it should be a straight average or a weighted average. Just seems that the methodology is in need of some consistency if these review scores are going to have any real meaning at all.

actually metacritic/gamerankings has some funky ways of translating things. 1up gave Uncharted an A- and Metacritic/gamerankings translated that to an 85. IDK about u but I've gotten plenty of 85's in school and it has never been an A-.
On topic: there is no foul play here, the guys at totalvideogame.com gave it an 8/10. I don't know where you see 88.4% (don't get the average, some sites are like IGN where the review score is not the average of all the categories)

No need for torches or pitchforks.....and certainly no need to defend KillZone 2.....my comments are more about the lack of transparency and consistency in how rating are published and aggregated. This example just stuck out like a sore thumb because the rating appears to say one thing, when the detailed scores and reviews give a much different perspective.
