Forums - Nintendo - Iwata Q&A interesting tidbits - SD card storage fix coming Spring, more...

I really hope it allows downloading to and lauching games direct from SD cards. Cleaning out my fridge is getting really annoying.

Last year, Iwata specifically said that the update will allow us to download games directly to an SD card.
His explanation about the rest of the functionality provided by this update was rather vague and led to lots of speculation on these forums and others. Bottom line: it is unclear yet whether the official update provided by Nintendo will allow us to run games directly from an SD card.

I agree, if I remember correctly.

Okami

To lavish praise upon this title, the assumption of a common plateau between player and game must be made.  I won't open my unworthy mouth.

This is exactly waht it does.

It also ups the spec to SDHC allowing for higher capacity cards and transfer speeds.

You can buy a 32 GB SDHC card for $80 on Newegg and that will surely be less come spring time when the bigger 64 GB cards launch.   A 16 GB card is just $25 bucks right now.

I would like a link, because that would be really cool to confirm that. I mean, that's more than the 20GB 360 HDD (taking formatting into account), and imagine how much space you could fill up with games before your games and the card total the cost of the 20GB HDD.

Me too.

They will be executable. Can't tell how I implicitly know. Provided other journalists I speak with can be trusted.

I can offer some logic behind it though. Directly downloading to the SD card isn't a very difficult update to implement. A few lines of code added to the Wii Shop channel and a graphical link asking to D/L to the SD card or internal memory.

What does take time is the executable coding and required DRM (and perhaps an SD card channel).

That's nothing. I bought a new external hard drive (Western Digital brand) that is 320GB for $106. That's a better deal than that 32GB SD card. It's also a slick and portable external HDD. It's the size of an iPod Video, and thin as well. About the size of a wallet.

I do think it'll upgrade to SDHC, because SDHC is incorporated in the DSi, so the extra licensing fees have already been paid for, so there's no reason for them not to.

I believe that they'll implement what Rock Band 2 and World Tour are doing. Reserve about 500 blocks of the internal memory (large enough to fit any single game or app), and then have it moved into internal memory temporarily

That's nothing, I just bought a 1 TB HDD for $110.00.

But not the point. Point is that we can expand the 512 MB internal RAM by 16 GB for $25, 32 GB for $80 (will come way down by spring), etc...

That wasn't to compare against the price ratio of capacity per dollar.

EDIT:  Very good point, Mr. Khan.

If they let you load off of SD cards I'll be satisfied. (We'll see though. We'll see.)
