Forums - Gaming - What's the history of the term "Halo Killer"?

A supposed "Halo Killer" does not exist. You could argue that some PC FPSs are better, but did the franchise start there? No, it started on a console. I can safely say the Halo games are the best console first-person shooters ever. Sorry Killzone 2, but you aren't at that level.

As many people have stated right now I think its a COD4 killer as COD5 imo sucked.

So why is this game a Halo killer? There are three main reasons for it.

1. The single player is an epic sci-fi story.
2. The Multi-player is better than Halo.
3. Microsoft will suck the life out the Halo Franchise

I doubt that. Halo has a much bigger universe and so a much bigger epic story (dont forget the books and comics). Also i dont think there will be more people playing KZ2 MP than Halo 3 MP. Forge and saved films make halo 3 mp the best FPS MP out there for me.

And sure, Microsoft will make more games, books, movies and so on. The Halo universe is so fucking big, there are endless story's to tell.

I would give everything to get my hands on the "Halo Bible".

I think it might have become popular as a result of the term ipod killer

I remember people calling "Black" a Halo Killer.

Sony is really trying to create a successful shooter-franchise to compete with Halo. It is a strange thing that a console with a userbase of 24million people actually has the most successful shooter for a generation while the other console with 120million users can't bring up a shooter that gets even close.

So they created a hype for some promising games like killzone, black (even though it was available for the Xbox), Haze and now Killzone 2.

The ironic thing about this is that MS has the Gears of War - franchise, which is the 2nd best selling shooter exclusive to one console.

The CoD-franchise is big, sure, but not as big as Halo. Halo is the game to think about when we are talking about shooters on a console. Most of the CoD sales are for the Xbox360 anyway.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Actually, the term should now be "Call of Duty Killer". Not Halo Killer.

I disagree.

Halo Killer is a broad title for many reasons.

Some people out there will put forward their detest for it. However you will always here the people who dislike something that is massively respected and popular. Look at Star Wars, The Matrix etc etc. You always can find in forums people saying how much they hate it, or how cliche it is etc etc. The fact remains that it constantly sells and has a massive fanbase. Bigger than any other FPS. When I say fanbase I mean active community members, Halo weddings, Halo cult following. You only have to go to a site like Bungie.org to see. We are talking over 5.3 million active members posting story arcs, making new Halo games. And not to forget the most successful machina to date that is Red vs Blue.

People will always downplay the Halo titles, but if I'm honest there really isnt another FPS that Ive ever played that draws me in as much as Halo. The story is probably the best story in videogames yet (IMO) and the art direction is perfect. Gameplay is always top drawer and the multiplayer is amazing.

Halo killer means more than sales people. If COD 4 was on one console it would have fallen several million short of Halo 3 sales for instance. And if Halo was multiplatform then I'd hate to think what it's sales would be.

The hype for halo started long before the game was announced for xbox. It started in the year 1998. It was announced exclusive for pc and it was something really special.

But after microsoft bought bungie they started hyping the game agressivley and had a huge marketing campaign.

I dont know if anyone remembers the halo trailer from the E3 2000. It was more like a short movie, then a trailer. That was the coolest thing i've ever seen till this time.

Half-life killer would fit better. It spawned tons of games and sold more than 13 million units.
Call of Duty killer also since the series became massive this gen.

As far as storyline goes, there could be a Resistance killer.

@OP: the term was coined by Village People fans pissed-off with the lost member, Master Chief, for sueing the other members for royalties.
Obviously you could not believe Master Chief is a Village People member and you haven't to believe me, but Google doesn't lie :
