I think you couldn't be farther from the truth..music games will stay as they are, if anything they're in their hayday now..they're only going to decrease, IMO. FPS will never lose popularity..they just won't. They may fall off slightly, but they'll always be a force in the gaming industry and a major genre forever basically.

I guess I'm wrong about the music games but... what about the "casual" genre?

Wii Sports killers, anyone?

There is no "casual" genre. If you mean collections of simple sports games (that are not necessarily shallow), well third parties have been attempting to get into that with varying degrees of success. It's not the next big thing but high quality entry-level games should be a mainstay for future consoles.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

In Japan, they are extremely niche.  Kind of like Cel-shaded jRPGs in the West.

That reminds me. I have to go back to America next week. I don't look forward to it at all.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Conservatives:  Pushing for a small enough government to be a guest in your living room, or even better - your uterus.

All genres have their highs and lows in terms of popularity.
So yes, it will drop of, and yes, it will come back.

Well some day, they won´t be selling as much as they are these days. There ´ll be a new genre or existing genre that takes over. Or even a resurgence of a long existing genre (see the music industry).

Music games are quickly coming to their saturation point, i think. Rock Band 2's sell-through will probably be lower than Rock Band 1's, but then we'll see what happens if it does sell more.

FPS certainly won't ever become niche. Racing games were the big things in the N64 generation (JRPGs were at their peak then, too, but Racers were more accessible and equally prolific), and racing games haven't gone away, they are just no longer the main event (aside from Mario Kart Wii). FPS will no longer be the main event one day, perhaps not too long from now, but never niche
