Forums - Sony - Publishers abandoning PS3, Sony needs to act fast (Are you kidding me?!)

It doesn't have to be more than one dev. to be serious. It has to start somewhere. These past holiday numbers were a HUGE sign to developers. Usually they don't make their Holiday season reaction announcements until the second month of the year. Consider this the first of a few key drop outs. The biggest consequence of this announcement, though, isn't that it's just a sign that developers are naturally reacting to the Holiday sales, but that this will give a lot of developers the courage to do the same. So while we should expect some to stop supporting as much, its the downward spiral that these type of announcements can have. The question is, how far will it go before next fall rolls around?

I'm not saying that Sony hasn't sold a solid amount of PS3s, but that global recession is strongly hitting PS3 numbers compared to the other consoles.  Also, its hitting the dev's pocket books.  Add in that PS3 is a bit harder to develop for, takes a lot of resources, there is another console that is a cash cow for a lot of low budget games, and developers tendancy to jump ship on the 3rd console, then this sort of thing shouldn't be surprising.

I have a bombshell for many in the community. Read these words and remember. Sony has already lost third party support. I know it was terribly easy to miss seeing that it has been happening for the past couple years. The only question is can Sony stop the hemorrhaging, or even recoup the losses back into the fold. This is not an either or question. By the way I want to meet some of you in real life.

I really want to see if you are literally binary thinkers. In other words you can only conceive of two possibilities. I would hand you a weapon and tell you to attack one person or another person. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if you carried out the attack on one. Seeing as it would not occur to you that you could simply refuse, inform the authorities, or attack your truly.

Sony has lost support, and is apparently continuing to lose support. That doesn't mean that every developer is going to black list the PS3. It just means that the PS3 isn't going to get a number of things, and if that number gets too large then its really going to be to the detriment of the owners. You might not give a shit about this extra content, but in due coarse the next thing might be something you really want. You should want Sony to ensure that does not happen.

The journalist may be taking liberties drawing a lot from nothing, but it is not an uncommon concern even on these forums. Sony isn't getting the choice support that some would like. How many times have we read a fellow member saying I hope they port that to the PS3 in six months? That is very telling. Honestly losing the content means that Bethesda bribed or not has most definitely lost a great deal of faith in the platforms viability. Bribes only work if the rewards are great enough as compared to what you might think you would get otherwise.

Anyway whether ignorant, lazy, or biased the journalist has probably stumbled onto something real. Remember this years games were in development, or started in development while the PS3 floundered two years ago. I would be shocked if Microsoft did not do some serious shopping to be on the safe side, and we could see a lot of that this year.

I really think you ignore logic on most levels.

EA supports Sony. Most publishers follow EA's example. Third parties wont abandon Sony. There might not be exclusive games anymore but thats for both sides. DLC exclusive content that is contracted by one of the console manufacture means the DLC is second party. The shocking part is that EA's exclusive DLC isnt contracted DLC, its willingly given.

HD consoles will forever have multiplat 3rd party games till the end of the gen unless something major happens.

does anyone know if the 360/PC version of Bioshock has the extra challenge rooms yet or coming soon?

My buddy has the 360 version and likes the rooms on my PS3 version.

Many folks besides him would be happy with those extras available as DLC on their version of the game I'm sure

The exclusive DLC was a "marketing" arrangement MS made with Bethesda.

I really am amazed at the hacks that get employed in "gaming journalism." This is a major industry, you would think it would attract some talented people to report on it.

Journalism is the only career where people who have no education or experience related to a topic get to write about it ... The more times you run into journalists who write about topics where you have some interest and knowledge the more you will come to realize that this is true.

The thing that I find personally interesting about this is that similar stories came out about the Gamecube at a similar point in its life and (I suspect) were probably a factor in Nintendo having difficulty selling systems. If enough people start believing that the only games that will be available for the PS3 are inferior versions of XBox 360 games there is far lower interest in the system for gamers ... When you combine this with the steady stream of stories about how poorly the PS3 is doing and the PS3 desperately needs a price cut to survive Sony has a massive quantity of negative press to counter.

Ahh Fuck it I give up

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Media has a lot of power.  Just look what it did for the Wii as well.  The effect you're talking about is part of what would aid in the downward spiral that I mentioned in my post.  We'll see.

Yeah.  I didn't think it was phenomenal.  A great game in its own, but it was largly Oblivion with a makeover.  The thing is, several media outlets considered it the best game of 2008.  IGN gave it game of the year.

Publishers can't afford to abandon the PS3.

QFT. There is no PS2 this time around and development costs are up. They need to make games for both systems to prosper.

You do realize that the Wii is selling at a faster rate than the PS2 did, Wii development costs are not dramatically higher than PS2 games, and the Wii has sold a ton of software?

Wii does not exist.
