Opinion: Publishers abandoning PS3, Sony needs to act fast

Silicon Alley Insider has an editorial which states that things have gone from bad to worse for Sony as publishers are now abandoning the system. While they are sensationalizing their headlines and beliefs, Behtesda apparently did state this weekend that they will only be making DLC available for Xbox 360 and PC owners.

Quote:
Even better, once players finish the game's core storyline, fans can download even more "post-game" content from Bethesda to extend the experience.

But not if they have a PS3.

Bethesda said this weekend they're only making new post-game content available to Xbox 360 and PC owners.

We don't know if Bethesda is in the middle of a spat with Sony (SNE), or if the company just realized it sells so many more copies for the X360 that the effort of PS3 development isn't worth it.

But this couldn't be worse news for Sony: The company pitches the PS3 as the premium device, but Microsoft's (MSFT) cheaper Xbox will deliver a far-superior experience of 2008's best game.

Flagging PS3 sales are one thing -- but game publishers abandoning the platform is something altogether more serious. Sony needs to turn the situation around for the PS3 fast.

Update on article -

UPDATE: A Sony spokesperson contacted SAI about this story, and pointed out some upcoming titles like Electronic Arts' (ERTS) "Red Alert 3" will have content exclusive to the PS3. Fair enough.

So devs are abandoning PS3 because 360 got Fallout 3 DLC?...............

Sorry if posted already.

Oh noes! A Positive spin on Sony's situation !

*facepalm*

microsoft bought media it's a full blown lately.

god ps3 loosing third party support.

Let the idiot who wrote the story hear from you. A horribly mis-leading headline with nothing to back it up.

- "If you have the heart of a true winner, you can always get more pissed off than some other asshole."

I highly doubt Sony will lose support this gen. While it may be last and may stay last, 360 is not exactly amassing a huge PS2 type base either. Considering the cost of making an HD game I can't imagine why a publisher wouldn't want their games on both systems to maximize return.

So...Fallout 3 rules the world confirmed?

Of course the negative spin would say that Sony were so troubled by Microsoft's securing of exclusive DLC that they decided they needed to retaliate and get some for themselves. Unfortunately, with little money, they could only procure the rights to Red Alert 3's DLC.

Who knows?

wow, it's time to sell my ps3, I'm so worried...NOT!

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

All this because of DLC? What the hell?

The exclusive DLC was a "marketing" arrangement MS made with Bethesda.

I really am amazed at the hacks that get employed in "gaming journalism." This is a major industry, you would think it would attract some talented people to report on it.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.
