Forums - Nintendo - Who agrees with me in thinking Wii will have the longest lifespan this gen?

Somebody would have to be crazy to disagree with you. I'll add another reason:

PS3 and 360 aren't doing bad, but neither Sony nor MS will tolerate not being the market leader. Their console successors will come out before the Wii and their old consoles will be abandoned to promote their Next Big Thing, and they aren't going to let Nintendo wear the crown for ten years before they try to steal it.

Nintendo will have the luxury of enjoying the ride and waiting to see what their competitors come up with before they respond.

I don't think that Sony's financial situation is such that they would feel the need to rock the boat if they find themselves in a profitable position even in 2nd or tied-for-2nd place.

Unless ... if their next console turns a profit from day one.  What a concept!  I wonder what MS would do.  I still think MS is the most likely to try to push a new generation.

i still think ninty probably won't even feel the need for a wii 2 when the competition releases their next-gen consoles.

150vg$ bet(with haggy) mk wii 2009 worldwide sales > any 360/ps3 game released in 2009.

current mk wii worldwide sales (jan 9th): 553k

Personally, I think there is only one thing that could really hurt the Wii long term is the release of Nintendo's next generation system ...

If you release a brand new system at $200 or $250 that is fully backwards compatible with the previous generation market leading console there is a very good chance that people would upgrade to the new system rather than buying the previous generation system.

I think you are correct and the main reason is that wii user base isn't after best graphics. Wii might be around for very long time.

I don't see them releasing anything but this tho... this will come out for sure. And it will upscale Wii titles to 1080p... :)

Good point again. This could spell doom for the Wii as we know it now.

1.) Technology does not decide the lifetime of a console, consumers do.

2.) Evergreen titles seem to sell strongly into their 3rd and 4th year(See Nintendogs and Mario Kart DS) which will likely keep interest in the Wii strong.

That said, I think the Wii's lifetime will be directly proportional to its ability to have no competition in its respective market. Who knows, maybe MS should steal exclusives like Carvinal Games 2 and Game Party 3.

:)

Pixel Art can be fun.

I think you are spot on disolitude.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

No, simply because Nintendo will need to come out with a more advanced system during next-gen. Otherwise not only is it certain they would lose market share (even if they have plenty of that ;-P) but they would let the competition get too far ahead technologically, both in hardware and in software.

They are already losing too much ground. Mario, Zelda, Metroid and other great Nintendo franchises used to be top-notch graphically. Those brands can only get hurt if during next-gen (2011 / 2017) they do not "evolve" enough.

The PS2 was also the third technologically during its' generation, but it wasn't as far behind as the Wii is now.

It's this exact thinking that has put the 360 and PS3 into the positions they are in. The fact that Nintendo sought to disrupt this theory and having it paying off in spades shows nothing you have said holds any weight for the markets Nintendo is tapping into. If people cared so much then the Wii would have failed. The DS would have failed. Remind me again who the market leader is?

@disolitude-I don't think the Wii is getting a price cut until there is a change in hardware. Either a slimmer Wii, a Wii with more features or the Wii 2 can cause a price drop, but I don't think demand is going to be going down anywhere near 2010 to force a price drop. Similiar to how Nintendo does not follow the Microsoft and Sony rule of price dropping their popular games they will not follow the rules of price dropping.

I'm still waiting for a Mario Kart DS price drop.
