Forums - Sony - Analyst: PS3 continues to lack a clear ‘must-own’ title that will drive sales

Which was the must-own title of the PS2? and the one of the PS1?

What made PS brand successful is that it had a wide range of good games, and I think the PS3 is doing, IMHO, a good job on it too.

How young are you? For PS1 it was FFVII and for PS2 it was GTAIII. And it's not like I am the only one to think this. I am pretty sure there is a consensus that these two games, for their generation, were "must own" (I know that GTAIII was for everyone I knew). There is no PS3 title that has even a 25% attach rate, nor one that has managed to become "mainstream" and influential in American popular culture (much like the GTA franchise, Master Cheif, or Mario). Furthermore, the most popular online games for the PS3 are multiplat CoDs which can be played on almost any system.

4 million is 76,000/week. What a horrible prediction. It just sold 150,000 so half that for the next 49 weeks.

how hard is it for you guys to realize he is talking about AMERICA or NPD data basically.

and what did PS3 sell this week (50k or so)

But I still don't beleive in the must have system seller game.  One game does not win a console.  A console needs more than just the big profile games.  I mean look at PS2, 130 million users and the hardcore games weren't pulling higher than 5 million (except a select few)  So what the hell where the other 120 million people buying.  Answer: the shovelware you so hate.

These supposed XBox fanboy analysts, do you remember what their usual predictions from the start of the generation were? It was almost always PS3 winning, XBox following and Wii a distant third.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I have been waiting for that title too.

I won the rest, I should have one, but nothing has grabbed me yet.

LBP not my thing, same with MGS4 (im more of a splinter cell stealth guy, not so japanesey)

But yeh give me a reason!

(kz2 aint cus i got enough shooters i need to play)

they need shenmue 3 or something, then im down.

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

I don't even know what this guy was thinking really. Just looking at metacritic theres tons of great games.

You got shooters like MGS4, Killzone 2 (soon), Call of Duty 4

Racing like Motorstorm and GT5P

Action like Uncharted and GTA

Platformer in LBP

We got all the basics covered

Those games are good but not "must own"s. How can the forth installment of a plot-heavy tactical shooter be a "must own"? Especially when the third iteration sold fewer than 5 million copies with a userbse of over 100 million consoles? Not too many people can pick up MGS4 as their first MGS and play through while understanding the plot, which is one of selling points of the game. As the sales show, less than 25% of current PS3 owners have deemed the title worthy of a purchase anyway. Furthermore, the online component has a medium sized, dedicated following and nothing more. "Must owns" can garner 100-200k per weekend online at any time, like the CoD's do on PS3 and 360 and like Halo 3 still does on occasion. You are confusing personal and critical favorites with mass appeal games that transcend even the gaming realm and draw laymen into the fold.

Exactly what I mean. They're not XBox fanboys, they're just crap analysts.

I think the point he is making is there is nothing on PS3 that says wow this game just blows me away.

I mean we can talk MGS4 Uncharted LBP etc etc and they are brilliant games.
But when you honestly break it down 360 has games that are just as good or better depending where you are coming from.
So while the price is high folks are most likely gonna go aith the cheaper option that does the same thing every bit as good if not better.

He is right. While the PS3 has excellent titles, there is still no "I can't believe you didn't buy yet a PS3 to play this" title.

Microsoft has only one of those - "Halo". Master Chief is a culture icon. It got the original xbox into the market and was the primary reason for the xbox purchasing decision. Even two years after the release of the third installment you still have million of on-line users each night shooting, beating and blowing each other. People will still talk about Halo at water coolers. The title has huge legs and is selling consistently week in and week out.

The PS3 is still in search of a title that can create a similar cult-like reaction from the gamers. Something that can attract millions and will be replayable for years. It has great games, but all of them are either shooting stars with fast sales for a few weeks and then darkness (MGS4 in the USA for example) or has long legs but very small audiance (e.g. LBP).

Prediction made on 11/1/2008:

Q4 2008: 27M xbox LTD, 20M PS3 LTD . 2009 sales: 11M xbox,  9M PS3

Maybe is lacks a must-own game but it owns must-own hardware, Blu-Ray. Game thing can be changed.
