What's your budget for the processor?

The Phenom will run you about $150-$200.

A Core 2 Q6600 Quad that beats it in specs would run about $200-$220.

It depends on the price point and the applications you intend to run. Intel'd quad-cores are faster but the Phenom 9850s are generally cheaper and will run most things as fast as you need.

Also, the Phenom 9850 has been replaced by the new Phenom II which is much faster and offers real competition to Intel. If you can get a Phenom II, they are better value than the Intel quad-cores at the same price. Finally, AMD motherboards tend to be cheaper so consider the whole PC cost.

For a mainstream quad-core, I would probably recommend the Phenom II X4 920 at $195. It is cheaper than the similarly-performing Core 2 Quad Q9300 at $250, and faster than its competition the Core 2 Quad Q8300 at $195.

Phenom II X4 920 at $195

I totally forgot about that.  A Core i7 could beat it, but that's an extra $100.

Most games aren't limited by the processor. Once you already have a quad-core at that speed, spending more won't really improve performance. You should spend the money on a better graphics card - which one are you going for at present?

If you must get a better processor, the best performance in each price range above $200 is:

About $200 - Phenom II X4 920

About $235 - Phenom II X4 940

About $280 - Core 2 Quad Q9550

About $330 - Core 2 Quad Q9650

About $550 - Core i7 940

About $999 - Core i7 965

Anything else (over $200) isn't worth buying. But seriously, stick with the Phenom II X4 920 and upgrade your graphics card instead. The best is the GTX295 or HD4870 X2 depending on game and resolution.

No, the HD4870 X2 is actually 2 HD4870's on 1 card. It's easily superior to the single HD4870 (even the 1 GB model).

An Intel Q6600 is an par performance wise with the Phenom II X920 and is on Newegg for $189.99.

Let's take a look at the figures.

Game Phenom X4 920 Core 2 Quad Q6600 X4 Advantage
Unreal Tournament 3 128.6 90.8 +41%
Half Life 2 Episode 2 161.3 138.2

+17%

Source Engine 83.3 79.3 +5%
Crysis Warhead 40.2 38.8 +3%
Far Cry 2 57.3 52.2 +10%

As you can see, Phenom II X4 920 is ahead by 3-41% dependding on game, far more than the 2.6% price advantage.

Yes, the 4870 X2 is two 4870s on one card and will get between 1.5-2x the framerate usually. It's much better.
