PS3. The PS2 isn't going to get another price cut. When it stops selling, they'll stop manufacturing.

I think a yr ago i read the news here that Sony has started production of PS2 yes PS2 officially in latin america.. and similarly there are quite a few software like Singstar and other which sell well on PS2. and i think some new studios are also allowed to make PS2 games for i think not much royalty.. atleast at that time it look like Sony is trying to capture casual market with PS2 and it was not a bad idea.. casual user are not going to pay $400 for a casual entertainment box..

So i think Sony may very well like to push PS2 in these BRIC countries with customized and localized softwares and may get a proper stream of income secondly it will also promote Playstation brand.. So on the whole it is not a bad idea.. and less than half the price of Wii it may be a good option for new casual market.

trying to push the ps2 in latin america is silly,  people from developed countries must think we live in a cave or something, everyone wants a wii or a 360, not an 8 year old ps2. Local taxes make the ps2 cost US$200, gues what?, a 360 here is US$400, most people will wait until they can get the 360. everyone knows the ps2 is dead and no games are coming out for it, but the most important thing is that piracy will never let the ps2 be profitable here. Minimun wage is around US$150 and a new ps2 game is US$40-US$65, do you really think someone will buy an original? for a original game to sell it would need to be around US$10-US$15.

If it is giving them profit and brand recognition than why abandon it.? Secondly when someone buy a console he will atleast use it for sometime and will buy some accessories so he will atleast not be giving $$$$ to the competitor product..

So if they can present PS2 as a cheap and valuable entertainment system, than i don't see any harm in it.. plus it PS2 game library is complementary to PS3 game library.. So it won't eat into PS3 sales at all

Please stop making threads about the price cut. Its starting to get annoying. Why would they need to cut the price on the Playstation 2. Its cheap enough! The Playstation 2 only has 2 or 3 more years left. What we really need is a PS3 price cut. If there is a PS3 price cut, then people will slowly move on to the PS3 and the userbase will have a huge increase.

That doesn't make any sense. Sony will cut PS2 price because that will boost PS2 sales and they still make profit from it. Why stop manufacturing when you can still sell product at profit.

You're assuming it will still make a profit.  Worse yet, even if it does it needs to be enough to dig them out of the PS3 hole.  There are a lot of other reasons why it's not a good idea to cut the price: Since the PS2 is still selling 400k units in December after 8 years a price cut wouldn't significantly increase sales of hardware; the software won't see spikes because it's a drop in the bucket and the used game market is so large; the system's profits are already damaged by the bad Yen convesion; and the system isn't getting much cheaper to make.  In fact, due to mine closures in Australia some parts in the PS2 are going to get more expensive as the metals increase in cost.  Further, the company has lost so much money it needs to reorganize.  It would, in all liklihood, be asinine to cut the price of the PS2 right now, and there's no point in the future when it will be advantageous.  Once the costs to sales ratio is bad enough to warrant a cut the PS3 will be profitable and the company's focus, meaning they can slowly phase out the PS2 in the larger regions.  I just can't see a further reduction in price when it's not going to significantly drive sales at all.  Psychologically, $100 isn't that much different than $130, after all, so I'm having a hard time seeing where there's even one incentive to cut the price.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

It should be the PS3, they'll give the PS2 a price cut when sales are really bad and when they are making money off the PS3 so probably not this year.

PS3, why lower the ps2 when it is selling great especially for a last gen console.

promoting ps2 would be killing the ps3.
