Ok, first let me say that I don't think the game is horrible. The graphics are better, but I can honestly say thats the only thing I like more. There's even a cutscene that comes at the end of the act where you have to go collect the inhibitors after rescuing the scientist where a military aircraft flies in the escort you out. Only, if your eyes are open, you can clearly see about 100 alien aircrafts flying around behind it ranging from the size of 3 football fields to the size of a Mini Cooper. I'm huge on things at least making sense, and this just pissed me off. It makes me think the devs think I'm a moron.
It's like when I was watching Harry Potter where he and that other guy (Black or something?) were being attacked by the lake and were saved by a magician from across the lake - only to find out later in the movie that Harry goes back in time to save himself. Explain to me how you would ever survive to the future to be able to come back in time to save yourself if you would be dead if you hadn't saved yourself? Needless to say, thats when I stopped watching that Harry Potter, and haven't bothered watching the rest. Anyway, back to R2..
The weapons in the game are far worse. And before I get into specifics, let me add that having to pull your gun up to aim with L1 is the stupidest addition to the game. This feature does not belong in Resistance at all. And I'm not saying that because I don't like this feature; quite the contrary, COD4 is my favorite FPS of all time. I just firmly believe they should have stuck with the same formula that made the game popular to begin with. I also think limiting the player to 2 weapons only is probably the second stupidest addition to the game. At first, I didn't think it would be so bad..then I realized I'm not paid to think. I get it from the standpoint of realism, but this is another area where I think they should have stuck with the same formula that made the game popular to begin with. There are a few areas, for instance after you rescue the scientist and turn to go get the inhibitors, where there is a pistol, a sniper, a carbine, and a rocket launcher all in one spot. Not to mention, if you played like me, you also still had the pulse cannon as one of your weapons. Situations like this seriously frustrate me. Anyway, on to some specifics..
The splicer is gimicky at best..it works fairly well in single player, but beyond that it's pointless and looks horrible in multiplayer. The Bullseye is a shadow of it's former self..what used to be my favorite weapon is now one of my least favorite. The Carbine is the only weapon that performs better than it used to. The sniper is basically the same, and the pistol is actually pretty cool I think. My only problem with it is that I don't understand why the explosions are so weak. Because they are very weak. The Wraith makes me cringe..another addition that could stand to be subtracted. It's very cliche, and Resistance was known for innovation. Same with the grenade launcher..it's like they stopped being creative and were just like 'Hey, some people like this stuff in other games, lets put it in ours!' NO INSOMNIAC NO! BAD DEV! BAD! The Auger is cool..except it's almost like cheating? All you have to do is pull the gun up to aim and you can see everyone within a certain distance in front of you, regardless of how many walls they're behind. The Marksman isn't bad, but the secondary fire just seems stupid to me. Enough on the weapons tho..
While, like I said, the graphics are better, I don't think they're nearly as good as people were trying to make them out to be. After I played through a little bit, I thought back to the times when people were trying to say it looked better than Gears of War 2 and it just made me laugh. Sorry, Sony fanboys, not quite.
Some of the bosses are also frustrating because after so long you realize it's next to impossible to die unless you can't move your left thumb. The Kraken fight out in the open water is literally impossible to lose as long as you watch when he's about to stab with his arm and strafe to either side. They just make you 'feel' vulnerable because when it screams at you, your screen turns red like you're about to die..but you pretty much can't. Also, while that big guy terrorizing Chicago is pretty cool in how big he is, it just feels way too, I don't know..'preset'..I wanted a battle where blowing up the bridge (skywalk? something..) above him was more like a 'final blow'. Don't get me wrong, he looked awesome with half his face missing...but it wasn't like a fight at all. Not even a little bit. It seemed like it might be after he threw me across the city, I'm like, 'hell yeah like me run through this shit so I can blast this fool a few more times!'..but I was let down.
All in all, I'm just not impressed. While the story is good and the graphics are better, theres too many things that take the game a step back. It's not as good as the first Resistance, I can say that without flinching. The weapons is probably the most aggravating aspect of it, as I've stated in the past the weapons are what made the first game fun, and I honestly think it's the majority of what killed the vibe in this one for me.
Personal score for the game? 7.2/10, with the first receiving a solid 9/10.
