Ogre Battle or Shenmue.

Ogre Battle had the best combat in the 16 bit era and created JSRPGS

Shenmue had the most original setting for an RPG ever, 1986 hong kong/japan complete with arcade games of the time.

It's hard to think of any that stand out from the crowd of fantasy slop other than those.

Chrono Trigger I consider FF.

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

FF still has the most SOLID rpg series where u r never met with gutt wrenching disappointment. Cant say that about many other series who have lasted as long.

That may be the case for you, but FFVII was the most disappointing game that I have ever played. Up until that point Final Fantasy was my favorite RPG series and Square could do no wrong. Playing Final Fantasy VII was worse than finding out Santa Claus wasn't real.

SMRPG

Please do not talk out of your arse.

Ogre Battle for the SNES is dated 1993.

Fire Emblem for the NES is dated 1990.

And there's probably something on the PC that existed even before Fire Emblem.

@Darc

How petty. You think u will get a rise from me but you wont ^^. If FFVII was SOOOO bad, what r the issues? What did it do wrong? Why did it sell SO much? Why is it heralded as the best FF of all time and having iconic characters being only put behind Mario?

Your just a hater, hating the fact that FFVII gets SO much media attention even now...kinda like the KZ2 hate, dont u think?

I guess I meant real time

Never liked Fire Emblem, I got it for Wii, barely played it, they thought I was mental when I traded it in, I was like 'just hand me fallout 3 and stop talking.

I do wish I gave it more of a shot tho.

In old FFs the cheese ball melodrama was offset by the goofy graphics, so it all seemed fun, like when in FF2 on snes the two kids turned into statues and the karate guy is like 'oh the children' that was funny.

with big cinemas and shit it just made me realise how bad the story was.

thats the main problem, if the story was more basic, or less weepy ridiculous, it woulda rocked.
