Intel may post a loss for this quarter
by Cyril Kowaliski — 6:00 AM on January 21, 2009

Last quarter's financial results weren't exactly a cause for celebration at Intel, but things could sour even more this quarter. Bloomberg has nabbed an internal Intel memo in which CEO Paul Otellini warns that the chipmaker might actually lose money in Q1:

"We are not going to wake up in six months with everything rosy again," Chief Executive Officer Paul Otellini told employees last week in an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg News. After 87 quarters of profit, the first quarter is "too close to call," the memo said.

Bloomberg comments that shrinking demand has forced Intel to run factories below capacity. We also saw the company cut prices across its processor lineup (mainly Core 2 Quads and dual-core Pentiums) on Monday, which should trim its gross margin a little.

Unlike AMD, Intel has managed to weather the financial crisis without posting losses so far. Nevertheless, Intel's latest results marked huge drops compared to the year before: the company posted profits of $234 million on revenue of $8.2 billion for Q4 2008, down from a respective $2.3 billion and $10.7 billion in Q4 2007. The company expects Q1 '09 revenue to slump to $7 billion. (Thanks to TR reader Carl for the heads-up.)

Well AMD is screwed than if Intel might be taking a lose. Especially when the dual core Core i7s are released... omfg... dual cores that handle 4 threads like a quad core... ya AMD is royally screwed

I hate global financial economic crisis's. Ah well, I'm an AMD man anyway so as long as they don't go tits up. Still, feel sorry for those who may lose jobs cause of Intel's situation. Job cuts are another thing I hate.

Intel shedding up to 6,000 jobs

Intel has been hit by the global fall in computer spending

Chipmaker Intel is closing five plants in the US and Asia, with the loss of between 5,000 and 6,000 jobs, as it responds to falling computer sales.

The facilities to close are its factory in Santa Clara, California - its last in Silicon Valley - and sister sites in Oregon, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Intel said the two US factories were based on older microchip technology.

The announcement comes a week after Intel reported a 90% fall in profits for the last three months of 2008.

Intel's profit for the quarter totalled $234m (£160m), down from $2.3bn a year earlier.

In addition to falling computer sales, the firm said it was being affected by the growth in popularity of super-small laptops, known as "netbooks", as they use lower profit margin smaller and slower chips.

'Good step'

Intel said the decision to close the five plants - including two sites in Malaysia - would not affect continuing investment in its more modern manufacturing facilities.

"The market will welcome these actions - this is absolutely a good step," said Doug Freedman, a computer analyst with Broadpoint Amtech.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, one of Intel's smaller rivals, also announced on Thursday that it was being hit by the global fall in demand for computer products.

It reported a 64% fall in quarterly profits.

Oh yikes. That's unfortunate.
