Wow, interesting.
Looking at the whole picture:
SW:
Machine - 07 - 08 - increase/decrease
DS - 37.32M - 26.45M - minus 30%
Wii - 11.9M - 13.5M - + 13.4%
Ps2 - 10.4 - 6.2 - minus 40%
PsP - 5.68M - 8.95M - + 58%
Ps3 - 3M - 5.25M - + 75%
X360 - 1.35M - 1.85M - + 37%
Looking at it like this, amazing news for the PS machines (the Ps2 drop was expected). Good news for the X360, and pretty bad news for Nintendo. DS drops a lot (it's a lot lower than both 06 and 07), and Wii has too small an increase.
Still, is that correct? No, not really.
A comparison as to how many owned the console (although at the end of the year, gives a skewed conclusion. It gives a rough estimate, and it's vague).
DS - 1.1 games/machine
PsP - 0.8 games/machine
Wii - 1.8 games/machine
Ps2 - 0.3 games/machine
Ps3 - 1.9 games/machine
X360 - 2.1 games/machine
So really, the DS is still doing better than the PsP (despite the PsP being the one with the grandest games for the year), and Wii is doing equally to Ps3/X360 (more machines = lower rate, being slightly lower is expected).
So it isn't that the Wii/DS is doing worse than expected (well, maybe a tad), it is that the PsP/Ps3/X360 are improving, compared to how lousy they were last year (again, compared to Wii/DS).
And yes, after reading what I wrote, I see that nobody asked this question... Why the heck did I answer it?
