Forums - Sony - Things I hate about Sony by a PS Fanboy

I am a Sony fanboy. There is no reason to me to be shy about it. I am proud to support what I believe is the best Electronics/Media company in the world. That does not mean I think everything Sony does is right. It don't mean I will back them in every venture they set fouth on, nor does it mean I praise every decision that they make. I think this is a horrible misconception that only fanboys have about other fanboys. So I thought I would bring up some of the things Sony has done surrounding the Playstation (as this is a video game site) that I get pissed off about. I hope we can have a thread from fanboys of all three consoles in which we show, we are not worshipers of these companies or their consoles, and we do realize they are not perfect. So to kick it off here is what I think about the history of the Playstation.

When Sony launched the PS1 it was the best console of its generation. It was one of the first 3D consoles, it used CD which put it up a notch on everyone for games, and it allowed them to play cds on it. The format also gave them the ability to pull devs over to their platform, because it gave them more freedom, and it was cheaper. Not only did they have the best console of its time, they also were new and had to prove themselves. They push the system, with great marketing and tons of games. The PS1 never even had a challenger. The N64 may be the greatest video game console ever made, but that was all it could do, and at 70 dollars a pop the games were to expensive, espceally back in 1996. At this point in time I was to young and the internet was to small for me to remember what was going on in the background, but it seemed Sony was at the highest of high in the video game markert, then came the PS2.

The PS2 came flying out of the gate with claims, claims, and more claims. With the huge success of the PS1 and the following behind it (with no compition at the time)  the PS2 took of like a F-16. Sony had great marketing behind it and yet again the Playstation was on top. When the Xbox and Gamecube arrived PS2 hype was to far along to slow it down. Even with the Xbox being the best console last gen, offering better graphics, better online, custom sound tracks, and a HDD in every system, it was to late. This is the point were Sony goes down the shitter. With the PS2 selling so great, even in the face of the box and the cube, Sony sat back and got way to comfortable. They stoped having any marketing worth mentioning for the console, the did not back up thier claims they made, and they did nothing to bring the console to the level of the Xbox. Yet people still continued to buy into the Playstation 2. Then the nightmare started.

When Sony started talking about the PSP everyone became exited. It was what many had been waiting for, for years. A handheld that could do it all, music, videos, games, internet, and it all fit in your pocket. Now Sony had found themselves in the same situation they had 10 years before. They had the best hardware, they had the disk space, but what they lacked hurt them more than anything could help them. This time around Sony lacked the drive, and the insperation that they had with the PS1. They had horrible marketing and priced their games out of the handheld market. Sony let their dominance get to thier heads. Not only were they failing on making a good case for them system, or giving people content at a decent price, they were falling on support for the platform. Thouse who bought a PSP or still have one today for that matter, have to work way to hard to use the thing. Due to Sonys ignorance the best parts of this device are lost to confusion and disapointment. It can do so much, but how the fuck do you do it? Are we all supposed to go out and spend another 20 dollars to actually get this thing we just bought to work properly? Shouldn't the PSP media manager and a USB cable be kinda standard pack in stuff? Did they ever realize how well itunes helped out the iPod? I mean come on Sony the PSP is an online enabled peace of hardware. Why can I not download, music, movie, tv, and games straight to it. Isn't this thing made by a company that owns half the worlds media? In my opinion this is why the PSP is not dominating the Nintendo DS. It had all the credintials, but Sony gave people the worst software treatment they could find, and that killed the PSP hype. Then came the PS3. Mabye Sony had learned their lesson?

Apparently not, yet again they bring out the best hardware of its generation, and start to kill it with bad marketing, and horrible software support. I understand mabye the PSP is not the best place in the world for a media download service, but thier is absolutly no reason why the PS3 should not have had one from day one. I understand this kind of stuff takes time, but what the fuck have they been doing the last 7 years. Was that not time enough to get somthing ready? Did they still not see the success of itunes like 2 years ago? This is IMO unaccpetable. The PS3 is worth every pennie of the 600 dollars it launched at, the hardware can do amazing things, and people would by it if Sony could justify that price by giving the people a way to use all the extra features the system has. At 250 a system better have more than just good games, at 400 it had better have even better games and a lot of other neat stuff, and at 600 it had better do all of the other consoles stuff plus and better. Having the best games dosn't even mean shit when you price yourself at 600 dollars. And IMO this is Sonys biggest problem. The PSP and PS3 both have the potintal to sell like the PS1 and PS2, and they both have the potential to have just as large of a stock it thier markets, but before this can happen Sony has to do thier job. If they could give people all the software they want, and market the systems the way they did when they had passion, they could not be stoped.

Other things they have pissed me off with:

The whole immersion deal was stupid. They have the money, they could have settled, but instead they dicked around, and now the PS3 is missing a feature it should have had in 1997.

The single anolog stick on the PSP. WTF is that about? It feels like it was leftvout on purpose, just to make it so the PSP2 will have somthing new. It prbably one of the most rediculos moves they have ever made.

If anyone else has any moves sony has made that pissed them off post it here. I am mostly looking for PS fanboys and girls to post what they hate about sony, but of oucse everyone is free to state their opinion.

ehh ok.

Missing cable - Lifes funny like that.. My $2000 tv did not come with hdmi i had to buy it separately.

Should have had this had that, you think they have 100,000 people working on PS things, they can only do so much in so little time. Home has been worked on since PS2 days, quality takes time. If you don't like it buy a xbox.

Bad marketing - Weird commercials that made no sense, this is nothing new if you even owned a PS console before.

Horrible software - my ass, you did not own a PS2 from launch did you. You have no clue what your talking about. I was playing nascar for monthsHthats how weak PS2s line up was early on.

Have you ever owned a console from launch ?

You know, I almost completely agree with this post.
In my opinion its obvious that Sony has bungled this generation, moreso than Nintendo bungled the N64 generation, and lost the hype and brand recognition surrounding their console. Not to say they've lost completely, but with the playstation brand we shouldnt even be thinking of the possibility of them losing.

PS: I loved the N64 and its games but Nintendo bungled that generation. Cartridges? What were they thinking?

Well Sony saying 'O da ps2 can do toy story graphics' and 'the ps2 can guide missiles' pissed me off...

I cant believe you are complaining about a cable when you just spent $600 on a PS3 i think another $20 really isnt going to hurt your bank balance.
On the Australian PSstore you can buy movies/music i believe its a beta trial to see if it takes off and worth investing in which it definately is IMO.
You think PS3 software is bad its good compared to what the PS2 had at this time in its life i had to resort to playing PS1 games on my PS2 it was that bad.
Do you know why the PSP was delayed?Because the [] button was too close to the screen meaning that either the screen or the [] could suddenly stop working because they were that close. They were extreamly pushed for space on the PSP and couldnt have added anything more in the PSP.
The PS3 had about the same amount of hype that the PS1 and PS2 did but it didnt help it why?The price if it launched at $400 or lower then the PS3 would have alot more sales now maybe not more than the Wii but it would have more than 4.16million thats for sure.

I agree the success kinda went to there heads but the PS3 is what Ken Kutarugi aimed for a do-it-all console and his plan was to retire before he was 50 he left SCE at the age of 56.

I hear you, but things i don't agree with:

S) N64 Greatest console ever made.... Meh!
O) xbox best console of last gen... MEH MEH!
N) Psp is fine with one anolog stick!
Y) Rumble will be back my brother :P I was playing dirt demo and I thought gee I really do
miss Rumble.

Lets not put down Sony. You can look at all companies and find fault. Do You Like Sony, You like the PS, You like the games etc. Then who cares! they bring the goods in the end :D

  Unleash The Beast!

End of 2011 Sales: Wii = 90mil, 360 = 61mil, PS3= 60mil

The PS3 itself is proof enough of Sony's poor decision making and actions as a company. Not that I'm complaining out of dissapointment, its actually given the Wii the opportunity it needs.

Well, technically speaking, the Xbox was the best console of the previous gen. :)  I'm sure you mean in terms of games, though, and while that's pretty undisputably the PS2, the XBOX did have a really good library (much better and more expansive than the 'Cube, definitely).

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

The PS3 gives users like me a choice. People who can afford the device and would like the device to remain the best specced console for many years to come.

The Wii and PS2 are also available at lower entry prices, so everyone can be happy. Only IMO the XBox 360 situation (reliability & poor service) is unacceptable for consumers in general.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

Choice or not, the point wasn't whether the PS3 helped the consumer but rather whether it helped Sony themselves or not. Furthermore, for a console to be successful (at least a Playstation console), its needs the market's majority or at least a sizeable sum, something it can't achieve as a luxury "choice" item. Why do you think the man who designed it was forced to resign (or was he demoted) after its release?
