well DQ doesn't feature emo characters, "juiced man-pretzels", its gameplay its 20 years old(but still magnificent) and the prominent anime designs made by toriyama aren't that appealing to a wide audience in the west

and its gameplay needs an overhaul like Kojima did with Metal Gear.

I'm not sure what you mean... Kojima has always been the designer of the Metal Gear series...

Why change a good thing?

Because DQ requires you to grind and has a difficulty bent to it. Westerners want easy rpgs like Fable...

yeah and games like Lost Odyssey... oh wait that game was hard and almost impossible without grinding in some parts !

Lost Odyssey required no grinding at all to win the game - it was designed that way. The only time you had to grind was to defeat some of the optional enemies.

Debating with fanboys, its not
all that dissimilar to banging ones

MGS4's gameplay is WAYYYY better than MGS3. it was a great step forward. DQ's gameplay is VERY OLD. has not changed at all.

Yeah... But Kojima made MGS3 as well...

Did you mean to say that MGS is a developing series? (Because it sounded to me that you meant Kojima changed what someone else had done with MGS).

And some things should simply stay the way it did. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for instance is still a blast, despite its gameplay, graphics, music and story all being dated.

Because dragon quests games are not graphic whore. Its just one of them story driven old school type of rpg which i'm hooked on since the first one. Hell I know almost all the Dragon Quest story and they all connect in one way or the other.

no, I'm talking about gameplay. MGS2 gameplay was a great leap from MGS1. MGS3 however was almost the same.  the camera was annoying especially since every other game had a 3D camera (even though this feature was later implemented in Subsistence). MGS4 controls so well, it is almost impossible to go back and use the old control scheme. so what I'm saying is that developers have to improve gameplay with each interation in order for the series to be enjoyable and not feel like a rehash of previous games.  and I know kojima made all MGS games.

I think cactus might be one to something with his brain receptor theory...

But seriously. I'm at a loss to explain why DQ isn't loved here as I LOVE it. Instead of every entry feeling like some overdone melodrama, each one feels like a fairly tale or a story book... an off-kilter, odd story book, but a story book still. As for the gameplay... well, games like Mario have gotten away with jumping around for eons without being criticized for it. We have the Final Fantasy's and Lost Odysseys, and the Fables to go to for different gameplay in rpgs. I don't see what is wrong with having a nice quality turn based game to go with.

Because it's repetitive and boring, personally I think the most redeeming part of DQ8 was that it wasn't FF12.
