Forums - Sony - Can PS3 survive to the N64 situation?

PS3 is in a much better position than the N64, one good game every 6 months is not the case of the PS3, 3rd party is strong like PS1 and PS2, just not exclusive like it was before due to the loss of the massive marketshare those 2 consoles had

Systems owned: NES, SNES, N64, PS1, PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox360

Currently Playing: UNCHARTED 2 !!

Waiting for: FFXIII, GoW3, GT5, Mass Effect 2

In a way, nintendo benefited from the lack of 3rd party support on the n64. There weren't many options beyond ninty's own titles so if you already purchased an n64, you had no choice almost. On the other hand, most of sony's first/second party is also lost in the sea amongst the 3rd party games. One could argue that R2 would've sold more if cod:waw didn't release last fall.

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

ps3 will also outsell the n64 by a good mile.

So the only system seller for the ps3 is gt5?

Name me an upcoming 360 system seller?

(ff13 doesnt count because its on both platforms)

GT5 is the only game that can surpass the mark of 10 Million, I don't see the other franchises strong enough to achieve that number (for example).

I know PS3 has much more 3rd party support than N64...but YES, it is also losing some 3rd party games like Dragon Quest X, Monster Hunter 3, Tenchu 4, Star Ocean 4, Fatal Frame 4.....games than normally appeared on a PS brand and now no. Of course, PS brand always had as exclusives the franchises GTA, Tekken, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, Soul Calibur ... and now no. So yes, PS3 is still there, but it is declining, that is what I mean.

wow another epic FAILED thread

Good point but not a very good comparison. ps3 has waaaaay more third party support than N64 but N64 was profitable whereas ps3 is haemhorraghing money. The real question could be:- Will ps3 get a big enough userbase in time for 3rd parties to again choose it as their lead platform? Then in turn; Can Sony get a big userbase quick enough so they can profit from software and sell enough software so they can afford a price cut to gain marketshare?

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

I had a N64 and the situation is not similar at all. One of the problems of the N64 was its limited storage system and the small and poor 3rd party support. Almost all 3rd party titles are on both 360 and PS3. And also 360 exclusives like Eternal Sonata or Bioshock made their way to the PS3. There also rumors about Mass Effect. PS3 will have the best library out there.

Play my LittleBigPlanet level: Mystic Runner. Thanks!

Microsoft is not getting tons of 3rd party exclusives, Sony will keep getting 3rd party support, and given that the PS3 should surpass the N64 next year at the latest, I dont think they are going to be loosing all the support in the future
