I want to thank everyone for their responses. It seems to be a different culture thing to me. the replay makes some sense, although it seems a little obsessive to me.

It can be obsessive. But so can anything in life. Some people get satisfaction out of unlocking a very difficult achievement in the game.
Not everyone can make a run through a Mega Man game without continuing.
Not everyone can destroy 50,000 zombies in a single Dead Rising Run.
But some can, and it's nice to have proof that you actually did it, rather than being remembered only by you.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
I would like achievements more if they unlocked an additional game element. Point in case has to be the GTA games where doing things x amount of times would unlock something, the unique taxi, gunship, plane, clothing etc. GTA 4 offers achievements for doing various things but no new content!
Also achievements for doing some of a games most basic elements or completely mandatory ones! WTF
I do like achievements but they are slightly meaningless!
Because I feel special as a result of my 1000g on Gears of War 2, and I can rub my friend's face in the fact that I have 2000 more gs than him and 6 less games
It gives u something to do after you finish. The most imp things here biz wise is replay ability and the arcade style way of comparing scores with friends (innovation by implementation).
It makes you play the game in ways that didn't think of before. It made me play more of the game I bought. Motivation.
I also think they offer good motivation while playing the game. It is always a nice feeling, particularly when your going through a bit of a boring part of the game, to have that little message pop up. Gives you some sense that the game is progressing. Poorly planned out achievements can actually be among my low points in a game, say Earth Defense Force 2017 where there are only 6 of them.

One thing that does piss me off is playing online when people are just doing things to get achievements.
Playing Horde one guy insisted that we should down the enemies so he can tag them with a grenade and then pick them up to use as a human shield.
As he was tagging his downed foe people were around him and when the grenade went off it killed 3 team members. And he kept on doing it despite this!
