In my opinion buying the same system twice is only acceptable if yours have brake and can't be fixed.

I did with the PS3, PSP and the Xbox 360.

History with PS3, Xbox 360:

Bought Xbox 360 Pro exchanged it for a Xbox 360 Elite---->traded my Xbox 360 Elite in for a used 60GB PS3---->exchanged my used 60GB PS3 for a different 60GB PS3----> traded my used 60GB PS3 for a new Xbox 360 Elite-----> traded my Xbox 360 Elite in for a new 80GB MotorStorm/PS3 bundle.

Then I bought a Xbox 360 Arcade 2 weeks later.

I had a PSP with 2 dead pixels-----> traded it in for another PSP that had 3 dead pixels---->traded it in for another PSP with 4 dead pixels----->finally traded that one in to get a PSP with no dead pixels.

Finally, yes I did buy more than one of the same console.

My first Playstation stopped having sound, and the second one just plain pooped. My first PS2 would shut itself down at random, so I bought a second one.
Some of the electronics on my first SNES broke after my sister dropped it.
I have two GameBoy Pockets: one was stolen, but by the time I got it back (long story) I had already bought a replacement.

I have bought two XBox 360's. I bought the second one almost three years after purchasing my first XBox 360.

We had two original game boys. One died a few years back.. a sad day indeed. I got a DS lite when they came out annnd.. there's a wii at my place and my parents house.

8th gen predictions. (made early 2014)
PS4: 60-65m
WiiU: 30-35m
X1: 30-35m
3DS: 80-85m
PSV: 15-20m

Original PS1 *US system*
Japanese PS1
Replacement to original US system.

2 Dreamcasts
Japanese system
US system

5 PS2s
Fat Japanese PS2
Fat US PS2
Fat Japanese PS2 bought while I was living in Japan.
Slim US ps2 to replace original US system that had died.
Slim Japanese PS2 to replace fat Jspec PS2

3 Xbox
US sytem
US system bought from a friend while living in Japan.
Japanese system I got from my local electronics store when they had a sign out front that said "free stuff" and among the items there was a Jspec Xbox with 6 games, 2 controllers and monster cables.

2 360's
Launch unit, my brother has it.
Another unit so I could play CoD4 with my brother and other friends.

I have 2 NES Systems (soon to be a thirdwhen I can find a top loader).

2 N64 Systems.

2 PS2 Systems and 1 Japanese PS2.

And multiple Game Boy systems.

I don't think these are negative things.  I think of these multiple systems as redundancy.  When (and its not if but when) one of these systems fails, I will have the other as a backup.  I own too many games to hope that a future game system will be supporting an NES or N64 cart.  Or even a PS2 game disk down the road.

I keep very good care of my consoles.  No system has ever died on me, even my launch systems like my original Game Boy, GameCube and PS2.  But I don't want to take a chance so I buy a secondary system when I have a chance.  And you'd be surprised what you can find at thrift stores or used game stores for super cheap.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

got 2 playstations (none broke, just used in different rooms), 4 ps2's (2 slims, 2 fat, same reason different rooms/houses) 1 ps3, 2 360's (upgraded my 2 year old with new 60gb), 1 wii, 2 psp's (upgraded fat to slim), 1 wii, 1 snes, 1 nes, 1 saturn, 1 gensis, 2 gameboy advances (both broke)

buy what you want, sell what you dont.
