The last few Sony ads haven't been bad.

They've just been misplaced.

The Sony team is used to being in first... and they are running "First Place" ads.

Like the type of ad coke would run.

Problem is... Market Leader ads are really only effective when your the market leader...

When you aren't the market leader you need more then "Hey we're awesome" ads.

Look at softdrinks for example.

Coke has it's ads that are basically "Coke is great."

What does Pepsi have? "Hey people like us better then Coke."

and "This is why we taste awesome."

When you aren't the market leader you need to explain why you think your better.

The closest add to come to it is the newest one with the people and there different shirts... but the problem is... it isn't saying or explaining anything.

Really they need ads that straight out say what the PS3 does best.  A good play would be an add that portrays the 360 and Wii just as gaming devices while playing up the movie aspects and the big shared games it has with the 360.

 They tried doing that with their "PS3 is a movie downloading machine" ad. It didn't turn out the way they wanted I'm sure though.

There was this commercial for the Playstation 2 directed by David Lynch.

 

if you like/know David Lynch's works you may like it. But if not, it will leave you VERY confused.

Nintendo did a great job with their ads and MS followed it very well. Why Sony don't, is a mystery to me.



Sony ads are horseshit. MS have ads here all the time showing people actually playing the games, whereas sony use all this psychobabble. Its ridiculous

Sony ad camapgin has improved since holiday 07(black octapus and  afterwards)

 

but it was a complete waste of money before that.

These are ads and promo videos Sega ran in the United States (at least most did). I don't think they turned the tide. Ok, some are a bit more clear, but...

The point of an ad is not to get you to think, but to persuade you to go buy something.  It is meant to entertain, captivate and hold interest so you want what is sold to you.  Advertising is meant to be a passive medium, not a game.  Other forms of marketing can do similar and drive you to think, but they are not advertising.

Yes, those ads did run in the UK. My friend from the Serebii Forums said they did, as I talk to him on IM on a daily basis. He said, "Oh dear God. Those ads were so horrid, as Sony made no sense whatsoever in them. The baby ad... O_O I had nightmares for a week or so."
