definitely play them in the order of release, as with anything. Some people say when they have kids they will watch the Episode 1-3 of Star Wars first but that would spoil knowing who Luke's father was, which is one of the best moments in the series (granted, they didn't need to reveal that at the end up episode 3, which is a problem I have with it. everyone knows who his kids were...ugh).

But, I digress...There are plenty of great moments with MGS2 that would be spoiled by playing MGS3 first.

Also, don't listen to vagabond, MGS2's controls are great if you have only played MGS1.

I wish I could experience it all again for the first time...I hope Kojima keeps working on games of that quality.

Ok you guys convinced me I'll play MGS2 before 3. I'll try to rent it I know a friend that travels to the city alot I could probably get him to rent me a game. Also is MGS2 as long as MGS1 because I beat MGS1 in about 2 days, 11 hours.

The games should be played as they were released (not as the timeline suggests) as this is how the story was written, with the previous ones in mind.

MGS2's & MGS4's story is brilliant.....don't be swayed by opinions of people who look at games through microscopes n hate them for not having the story "they wanted" them to have

buy MGS3....play it....then play MGS1, then MGS2 & finally MGS4

Well I already own 1 and 3 (two copies of 3) and I have to play 2 because everyone is are saying it'll be better for the story in 3 and I'll definitely have to play 4 if it had the best graphic of 08.
