It doesn't make sense that the PS3 match the sales from the previous year after the holidays when during the holidays it was down by ~15% YOY. Hmm, maybe its the post christmas sales clearing excess PS3 stock in Europe combined with the roughly 10-15k residual boost from WKC in Japan thats doing it maybe?

Actually you're completely wrong, only America improved!

Let's look at it per territory (last year vs this year respectively):

Others -> 107k to 98k (a decrease year-on-year)

NA -> 56k to 72k (an increase year-on-year)

Japan -> 36k to 29k (a decrease year-on-year)

@NJ5

but why is there a PS3 increase in NA?

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

@ NJ5, then why is the PS3 up nearly 50% YOY with the most expensive console in the territory hit hardest by the recession...

Tease.

if the Xbox360 can keep this sales over the whole year, it would sell 12 million. So with a great xmas boost, 16 million could be possible, which would be a much better year than the year before.

Just saying this, because PS3 fans said 2007, the Xbox360 would have peaked after Halo3.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

@darthdevidem01 / Squilliam: I don't know, the only good explanation I can come up with right now is that there's a two day difference in the comparison (week ending 12th for 2008 vs week ending 10th for 2009).

That could mean we'll see a drop next week whereas last year sales didn't change much.

PS: Squilliam it's not 50% up YoY, more like 29%.

yoy is a terrible way to estimate current sales trends(on a week by week basis). there so many different market situations that have changed, many of which can not be easily quantified.

yoy is really only useful to show growth or decay over a previous year, but even then you have to be careful.

It seems so simple to me, yet it seems only slimebeast understood...

The 360 got christmased HARD, huge numbers (for the 360 at least), the PS3 got a Christmas boost, but nothing even close to epic (in fact less than last year)

I cant see why it is so hard for you all to believe it is selling steady?

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

DS still sold out everywhere, I never thought it would be supply constrained again at the rate they are pumping those things out!

Wii supply constrained as well, no big surprise.

PS3 maintaining well,360 doing fantastic.

christmas is over =(

@bigjon: I think YoY is quite useful for any period of a month or more, the holidays definitely apply. Why do you think companies always do YoY comparisons on each quarter?

I cant see why it is so hard for you all to believe it is selling steady?

It is not selling steady as you can see in the territory-per-territory comparison (even accounting for the 2-day difference, it's still noticeably down in Others). Of course the next few weeks will also be telling.
