Forums - Sales - THE GAP - PS3 can't catch the XBOX360 - pure mathematics

Look at how much Wii outsels the HD consoles by on a weekly basis. You are right about one thing, 50 K a week wont cut it like it would have before the 360 price cut.

A well timed PS3 price-cut in line with GT5 or a couple of other huge exclusives could erase the lead in a year or less. Just like the 360s lead went from 5.5 mill in September to probably around 10 mill by the time April rolls around. Although I'm not sure if Sony cares enough about second place.

And until PS3 has a price cut, the Xbox 360 will continue to outsell it...

PREDICTIONS:
(Predicted on 5/31/11) END of 2011 Sales - Xbox 360 = 62M;  PS3 = 59M;  Wii = 97M

Sony has a lot of leverage left in price alone and they have miles to catch up in marketing all the while getting all the biggest IP's out there (like many mentioned before).
Nothing is for certain, this gen in unruly and unpredictable, different from any other and it seems reluctant to follow most of the conventions we usually base our parameters and crystal ball foresight on (as is clear in all the horrible predictions in here, mine included).

Price is the LAST thing sony has leverage on.

They stil haven't made 1 cent on the ps3 and it  is causing the games division and companany as a whole to lose money.

You may have confused leverage with liability

Anythin can happen indeed :p

Who knows maby 2010 reputation of 360 is ruined and it just starts selling like dip shit ( JUST SAYING XD IMAGINE IT )

Then Ps3 sends its GT5 and GoW 3 etc etc and the sales go SKY HIGH ( JUST IMAGINE IT lol )

That could make the gap more then 50 XD

and it has sold over 50k b4 i belive but who knows its gonna be fun race to watch xd

I really don't see the 360 possibly being Microsoft's flagship console any longer than 2011 as they'll need to get next gen Gears out by that point which will lead to retirement of the 360 and lots of time for the PS3 to pass the 360 and even make a strike towards the Wii.

A) No they don't

B) Forward Compatibility

Going "Yippie!" if the PS3 beats the 360 after the next generate XBox system is launched is a hollow. When the lead matters is when the system is viably competing in the marketplace for new customers, so that the base is installed. Outside of that, one is a hardcore fanboy treating it like a game.

Whoopie that the PS3 beats the 360, after the XBox is on the next generation building up to a 10 million console lead in the generation that follows this.

Yes, but the PS3 will have a 40 million or so lead on the next xbox, and the Wii 2 (not the Wii HD coming out in 2010 which will basically be a Wii SP ie. a Wii with no tech improvements that does have the ability to output HD graphics justifying its keeping the $250.00 price point at that point in time) will not really be any more technically powerful than the PS3, so the PS3 will continue to sale while it is competing with Wii 2 and the Next Box.  It will pass the 360 and have a large lead over 720.  And Sony doesn't  have to bring out PS4 for a long time while it will be in Microsoft's best interest to get their next super system out at a point in time that they have a title like Gears 3 to move it out of the stores.

Thats exactly why Microsoft are not launching a new console in 2011, how stupid do you think they are?

You think production costs will remain the same throughout the entire gen? They will go down and when they do, the machine itself can be cut considerably in price over the course of 2-3 years.

There are too many variables...the 360 has built its lead through releasing first and slashing its price to bits

I don't understand how the X360 has slashed it's price to bits, in comparison to historical price drops.

The Xbox 360 in America has dropped it's base price from $299.99 (core) to $199.99 - a cut of 33%. Of which, it took 2 years and 10 months from it's release in said territory to do so.

In the UK, it's reduced it's price from 199.99 GBP to 129.99GBP. A 35% drop over a similar time period.

Compare this to the Playstation 2, which saw it's first (and most major) price drop on May 14th, 2002 which was 1 year and 6 months from launch, and dropped 33%.

So I don't think that it's fair to say the 360 has slashed it's price to bits. You could easily lobby that against the Xbox, which dropped 33% in 7 months, but not the 360. It's actually one of the slowest-dropping consoles in history. It'll only (likely) be surpassed by the Wii.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

sony could realistically outsell the xbox in japan by 20k a week on a weekly basis, with a europe and usa price cut it could be up to 60k in others and 50k in the states alone....good marketing could increase it even more...

I think your main "mathematical" flaw is youre just using 50k
