This game is one of my most wanted on the PS3. It's pretty impressive. I think I saw Yakuza 2 the other day in the shops, maybe I should check it out.

Yes and no. It plays like GTA, but the Yakuza series is much more story focused with actually fleshed out side quests. The casinos, clubs, escorts, etc. are all really done well.
