Forums - Gaming - Is their a future for FMV ?

Back in the 90s when CD-Rom games were becoming the norm, a lot of games had FMV (full motion video).  Gameplay mixed with FMV cutscenes of real life actors.  At the time FMV was pegged to be the future.

The first game comes to mind is Sega's 'Night Trap' for the sega CD.  On the 3DO I played quite a few games that were FMV and the best one was Wing Commander III (it starred Luke skywalker).  Between the space fights, wing commander III was very FMV heavy indeed.  But most other games with FMV were just rubbish.  Resident Evil on the PS1 had some FMV scenes but that was a class game.

I just played Need for Speed: undercover for Xbox 360 and that too has FMV with some hot women and cars but to me it just seems pointless (pointless game also ).  I really want to see real-time cutscenes of the game engine like MGS does and Killzone II suppose to do.  Is they still a future for FMV in games ??

Last game I played with FMV was Wing Commander Prophecy. I'd bend that commander over the bar ANY day opf the week...

Wing commander III (3DO), Wing commander IV (PS1) and Wing commander prophecy (PC) had some good story to them, sometimes I though I was watching a film.

Shame that the film version was Poo.

Pretty soon all games will be using nothing but In game cutscenes, Square-Enix which are masters of the art of FMV are starting to use it less and less because the Hardware is now able to preform and have the capabilities that are quite close to what they wanted to express via FMV

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

I always remember Fear Effect when the topic of FMVs come up because the landscape and backgrounds of that game all consisted of this very impressive looping FMV image. Man I want to go back and play some Fear Effect right about now.
