They didn't really comment on it... but if they have the tech available to do movies, games are only a short spurt away.
The reason the PS3 has such an easy time doing 3D is due to the fact that it can render to multiple targets in a single frame (see: deferred rendering, the reason KZ2 looks so good, and the major advantage the PS3 has over the 360, in terms of rendering horsepower).
The 360 cannot do that efficiently, but it can do it -- especially if most of the data was pre-processed, and didn't have to be rendered on the fly (i.e. a movie frame). The GPU is likely taking a pair of "depth textures" and two source movie frames, and using them to generate a "3D image", which the special glasses separate for your eyes. In the PS3s case, if can actually render the scene from two points of view in a single frame (whereas the 360 cannot, without horrid performance issues), and then combine the images.

Where does all this "360 cannot do that" come from? I wasn't aware MS did any tampering with 3D gaming yet for people actually see how it performs. Nvidia does it with just their GPU and drivers... so why couldn't MS do it on the 360 with the GPU and updated firmware? If I remember correctly, the 360 GPU is actually quite decent, and is better than the PS3's, so why would this cause "horrid performance issues" on the 360 using it's GPU for 3D gaming?

Something about the unified memory architecture keeps the X360 from being able to render to multiple targets easily (or efficiently), as I recall. You'd have to ask a 360 graphics pro to really get the detailed scoop on why that is.
edit: its actually the 360 GPU's eDRAM that's the issue.
^^Ok thanks, I'll have to look into that. I was just curious to know why you thought that and if there were any basis to it. If it turns out there is, then I hope MS can figure something out. Still 3D gaming won't be something studios are adding to their development for at least a few years. The tech requires some pretty advanced and limited/costly HDTV technology which won't be mainstream, or to the "millions" level for quite some time. Any 3D games being developed now would not be able to be fully utilized for the majority of the console consumers.
@Nightsurge, Sony at CES had Wipeout HD and GT5P Up and running in what Arstechnica said was one of the best 3D showcases they've ever seen :x I don't know the details, but Sony has a way to take games that are already out and include this technology.

Both those games are 1st party (well, GT5P may be 2nd party I guess, technically). They could have been altered to use a different rendering pipeline for the show.

There would be little difference in making the 360 play 3D games and movies. If the tech uses the GPU like it says, then games could easily be built to do this on the 360 as well. And since this technology is springing (tada!) onto the 360 officially, before the PS3, it is likely that MS could make 3D games before Sony. Perhaps this is partially what MS is talking about when they say they have lots of innovation in store for the 360 in 2009. Just imagine it... 3D Netflix HD streaming... that would be awesome! And the only console to officially support it would be the 360! Cha-Ching!!! Ignorance they say??? Pfft to that. Of course the PS3 is capable of it, just as the 360 is..... no one ever said the PS3 couldn't do it... merely that MS may beat them to it yet again. |
I'm not saying the 360 couldn't do it, just saying that only to this point have Sony done it already. Plus if I am not mistaken the 360 would require one of those new 3D ready plasmas and DLPs. Which are still rare and expensive. And plasmas are the worst thing a gamer could get because of the burn in problem still rampant among all plasmas. But the way Sony is doing it is all you would need is a 120hz HDTV. So Microsoft may beat Sony to 3D movies, but very few people would be able to enjoy it due to the TV requirements.
@Groucho people are saying it's because both of those games are 1080 @60 FPS. If this is the case, and it's Sony's machine that's doing the work, then they're already in the perfecting stage :x
