Forums - Sony - MS hints at decline in third-party PS3 support

If the numbers were truly the only thing that mattered, then the developers would all be dropping Xbox 360 support and PS3 support for the Wii.

However, it does not because it is relatively easy to port between the HD consoles. And the market is roughly bifurcated (split) between Wii and HD.

In essence, this is MS posturing, trying to make sure that (a) the 360 is the lead console for multiplat development and (b) certain developers stop thinking about Sony exclusives.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I don't see where Greenberg makes that claim in the quoted statements. Seem like the author is just trying to stir the pot a little.

i just really hate the way MS does business. between this and trying to spread a ps3 price drop rumor MS really are the assholes of this business. well, i can't do much but MS isn't getting a cent more of my video game money cause i'm voting for the other guys.

That is so sad. What do you think competing companies should do, praise the competition? I just love how ms does business.

there is a huge difference between praising the competition and starting damaging rumors about the competition.

hypothedical: say we are both interviewing for the same job.  i start a rumor at that company we're interviewing for that you are a pedofile.  would that be fair?  i mean, we are in competion for the same job so obviously i shouldn't praise you but is it fair game to start a false and damaging rumor about you?

i say no.  my money says no.

btw: fixed an error in my original post (bolded)

Wow, that was awesome. If ms says that they are going to cut the price too if sony drops the price is equal to calling someone a pedofile, you have to be delusional.

i dont want to speak for this poster....but MSFT and this greenberg asshat i believe said something along the lines of Sony simply dropping the price or having to by april.....the beef isnt with wat MSFT business model says to do if Sony does but the fact MSFT is talking about that puts the idea in the publics mind....its cheap, bottom line.

Company A shouldnt discuss future decisions of company B let along when its common broad knowledge the information and opinion will damage sales. But alas, its MSFT.

Actually rumors, speculation, and articles of a Sony price drop has been circulating well before MS made any of those statements.  Defending Sony and condemning MS is ridiculous as Sony is guilty of many of these "cheap" tactics as well.

Sony needs to put a few ninjas on a plane and deal with the Microsoft problem once and for all.

3rd party developers can't afford not to release on at least 2 of the major platforms.
IF they are using a development system/process geared towards multi platform they should get higher profits by doing so. Those who develop without regard for more than 1 system, will of-course have a high cost porting the game to other systems. Here is where the 3rd party developers should focus in these financially unstable times. They should use multi platform development system making it possible to sell their games on 2-3 platforms without much extra man power. The exceptions are of-course those developers who KNOW their games will sell 3 million or more on one platform, but even those developers loose out on potential profits. It' makes business sense.

ooooh put your tin hat on mate.

Sony fans wont like you saying that. That would mean the "power of the cell" would be a waste of time as the lowest common denominater would rule. Its all bollocks of course... but that is what they will say.

yes and no. The development systems should use the strengths of all systems it support.

Today that is not the case, but I hope it will be. If the system is using the Cell it should not increase the workload of the developer. That extra power should come for, more or less, free. 3rd party game engines don't use the cell much, if at all today.

If you are a 3rd party publisher, you see the one console selling more than the other one, you see that the userbase is already 8 million bigger, you see it is selling more software per console, you see the other one stuggles to drop price and to appear to a wider market and the leading one offers you a decent amount of money to make your game exclusive... what would you do?

Maybe some 3rd party publishers decide to go exclusive again...?

What has a higher chance of selling more copies of a game (Is all you need to ask yourself)....a console with a 20 million user base or those 8 million extra consoles on the 360?

3rd party publishers are going to go Multi-Platform pretty much 85-90% of the time this generation.   Why wouldn't they?

Microsoft has money,  but people grossly over estimate how much money they have to just "give away".

Third party support won't really dwindle on PS3, it's still selling well and 20 odd million consoles sold so far ain't bad. But 360 will get more support (sells more games) and remain the lead development console for third party games.
