Forums - Sales - Sony: 50 million PS2s sold in North America

why don't they post the Ps2 numbers right next to the other system numbers?

I was wondering about that too.

The PS2's numbers are shockingly high since the release of the XBox360. If VGC has avoided putting the PS2 up there due to its dominance of the last generation, put up its numbers since the "beginning" of the current generation (X360 release), and lets watch how it continues to compare.

It IS still in production, and it IS still a serious competitor, no matter when it was first manufactured.  Excluding it moves the site away from actual market analysis, and more toward fanboy wars.  Yes, it is "dying", but not so much that it can be discounted from competition, especially in terms of software.

Well, as we are talking about the Ps2's total, and people seem interested in the others, let's check the list.

Numbers are

7th gen = sold so far

6th gen and before (exluding Ps2) = up untill Fiscal 07

Ps2 = 50M

1. Playstation 2 = 50M

2. GB = 44.1M

3. GBA = 41.1M

4. PS =  40.8M

5. NES = 34M

6. NDS = 32M

7. SNES = 23.35M

8. Wii = 21.12M

9. N64 = 20.64M

10. XB = 16.42M

11. X360 = 15.85M

12. PsP =  15.6M

 How would you count the market share then?

Ps2 =  130M = 58%

Wii = 46M = 20.5%

X360 = 28M = 12.5%

Ps3 = 20M = 9%

And that is what is displayed on the front page. Overall market share.

It has no place there.

Only use PS2 units sold since the X360's inception, or even the Wii's inception (i.e. since newer consoles/competition were available) -- that'd certainly provide less of a skew than ignoring it altogether.

The point is that new PS2s are sold, in lieu of a Wii, XBox360, or PS3.  I don't see how its possible to deny that PS2s sold past the Wii's inception are not competitive products with the Wii/360/PS3.

And i can bet you that new gba, xbox and probably gc are sold too. So, let's just do that

And for this

I don't see how its possible to deny that PS2s sold past the Wii's inception are not competitive products with the Wii/360/PS3

i mean, there are few people out there that think the wii is not competing with the X360/ps3 xD

Tool, tell us.  Are those still manufactured?  Where is it "possible"?

How on earth does VGChartz (not its community, just ignore the forums) ignore the Ps2? Where do you want it to be added?

It is on the worldwide (all of them) weekly page, on an equal basis as any other system.

The market share in the Other HW has Ps2 included (weekly market share)

It is lacking from the front page, because that is where they track total market share.

The only place I see the Ps2 being needed, is in the "HW ending 3rd January 2009" section. It doesn't have the Ps2. Still, there's almost certainly a reason for that (and I guess that is that ioi gets less data for it).
