there's also Battlefield 2 which is still pretty popular and Battlefield 2142, kinda sci-fi (not completely :P), which I would say is fairly popular

however I think if you are low level it's a bit harder than COD4, and you don't level up too easily as in COD4 (at least *I* didn't), as you have to pick a class and really play as that class to improve.

Leveling up in FPSes really doesnt do it for me, and Vlad has more or less mentioned all the problems i have with it.It makes no sense to award better weapons to player with better skills. What would have made sense was giving the noobs the best weapons to choose from, and stripping down as time went by, till they are left with the very basic weaponry(at a level beyond which everyone should have similar skills).

That sounds horrible. Stripping weapons from a game as time goes on? So your reward for advancing is playing with the shittiest five weapons and a crappy pistol? I'm pretty sure everyone would be deleting their multiplayer advancement every day or two.

@Onyxmeth
It was just a statement of logic. I never said people would like it, but its way more logical than powering up players who have already invested enough time and effort on the game to be good at it

Whenever you're ready to get to the next level you should try Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Preferably the PC version.

ET:Quake Wars is a lot more advanced than normal FPS-games when it comes to leveling up/upgrades and also the tactics and team-play.
(but doesn't have the steep learning curve of tactical squad based shooters á la Ghost Recon which I don't like at all).

Is that game actually good? I tried the demo on PS3 and it was the glitchiest, twitchiest mess of a game I have ever played. It lagged horribly too. Basically it was unplayable.

Oh. I know the console versions got bad reviews but I never understood why. The PC version of ET:QW is easily the best shooter I've ever played, and I experienced no difficulties in the console version demo. No lag either. The game takes a bit longer to get into though than the 2 hours of game time the demo offered.

What do you mean by glitches and twitches?

Everything. The aiming is all twitchy as is the movement. There isn't a smooth movement as you move the analogs. The aiming must be on some wacky aim assist because it jumps without me moving it. I would chalk it up to lag, but it seems the lag is independent of the gameplay issues. The game basically runs fine for a time and then starts to jump frames. It's really annoying. If you have a PS3, or have access to one, try out the demo and you'll see what I mean. If you don't, then you must be playing with these problems and are a glutton for punishment without realizing it.

You might be right with your last sentence - I find the aiming in shooters on consoles so difficult that I probably wouldn't be able to judge weather there are glitches or not (I feel the same way as in your description when I play Halo online lol). I didn't feel there was any aim assist though.

Seems by your description the console versions have serious issues.

LOL!

Actually I love his idea. Nubs should always be given a handicap.

Wow.. I'm guessing you're a Nintendo fan.

^Im a bigger fan of FPSes than of Nintendo.
I personally believe in a level playing field since thats how ive learnt playing FPSes. I remember a match when i was just starting off, i mustve been the marked n00b. One of the guys kept picking up the Quad Damage and "humiliating" me. That frustrated me, true, but it also made me wanna grow up and take my revenge some day. When a n00b gets killed by a player nowadays, he could always say" that guy had better weapons".

I believe The Conduit is going to have one.

God, I hope not.

I'm with the no leveling crowd. I don't think leveling systems have any place in competitive multiplayer games, unless everybody starts at level 1 at the beginning of the match, like in Warcraft 3/DotA.

The experienced player already has a host of advantages over a new player. They know the strengths and weaknesses of weapons, their reflexes are more trained, they know the choke points and ambush spots, they know the location of supplies. With all of these inherent advantages stacking in favour of the veteran, there's no reason to add in more gameplay mechanics to stack things even more heavily against the new player.

A better idea is a class system or some other kind of character customization which doesn't give extra rewards to those who have more play time. This is one of the reasons I haven't picked up World at War.
