FFIV, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FFVI, VII, Tactics, VIII, Vagrant Story, FFIX, X, and XII are all high on my list for best games of all time.
There is no doubt in my mind that Square still has the ability to craft Games of all Time, and they have done so recently. TTEWY and the KH series' are both high quality IPs from Square. People just think that because of a few sucky spinoffs, and because they didn't like X/XII as much as they did VII/IX, and because Square hasn't published a major release in a few years, that they've lost it.
Quite to the contrary, I am certain that Square could never actually lose it. They will already go down in history as one of the best and most beloved developers of all time, if they began making Shrek games exclusively.

It requires a little bit of nostalga to caputre the magic it once held. VII, however, can still capture the hearts and minds of the more intelligent youth, no nostalga needed. That is why I believe it edges VI out, in my mind, for overall "best" final fantasy game.
VIII is by far my favorite though.

The PS1 remake of Chrono Trigger is even more infuriating than the FFV and FFIV and FFVI remakes. Load times for the damned pause menu!

It's.... something to consider. If you want your RPG fix, especially from Square, it's pretty much the place to go nowadays.
