Forums - Sony - New PS3 board shown at CES: Smaller, cheaper but not small enough for slims

http://www.networknewsjournal.com/news/graphics/ps3-gets-naked.html

HIDDEN AWAY IN A SMALL CORNER at a CES press event were two revisions of Sony’s PlayStation 3 gaming system.  Although most people have seen the guts of the original design before, this is one of the first times that the latest revision has been on display.

As you can see the latest revision is smaller than the original.  According to RAMBUS, the new design has been optimized for performance and energy efficiency, but also lacks the PS2 emulation chip that the previous version included.

Not sure how much smaller it is compared to the current PS3 motherboard, but it definately is good firm step on the road of cost cutting.

Tease.

Interesting. Thanks for the post Squill.

Nice. Quite a few changes I can spot. The XDR seems to be half the size in the new redesign.

Hopefully these means a price cut sooner than Q4 (which is oh so long away).

PS3-Plum?

What's between Fat and Slim?

The 'emotion' engine is the chip on the left hand side of the first board. It is clearly missing in the second board and probably the biggest factor with regards to the reduce size of the revision.

The Cell looks a bit smaller than the RSX in the new revision, but not much smaller. It could be the new 45nm Cell, but I'm not sure.

Are you sure that is the latest revision, I think I have seen that picture before CES, though I am not sure

Oh no, my mistake, that is something I saw from CES

I think this is the 65nm Cell.... I remember reading somewhere that this is merely a showcase of the original (60gb) board compare to the current (40gb) board... don't quote me though as my memory is hazy.

From what is said in the article it's the current ps3 mobo not new revision.
