Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft gives finger to competition: Perfects gesture interface

This is a pretty interesting development. Theres a video here which shows the guys at BBC Click using a TV's gesture interface. Where it gets interesting is that it shows the presenter browsing an Xbox 360 games collection with that same interface. Just browse to the bottom of the page, sorry can't enbed this.

I don't understand really what this means, there were rumours of Xbox 360s being used inside television but as I can't see the whole picture im not sure whether theres an Xbox 360 below the TV or if its built into the TV itself. Looks pretty neat and it pretty much validates my theory that the NXE was always meant to be used for new interface methodologies and you can see with the picture slide show that it may just follow this model.

What I do know is this: You will be able to use gestures to browse the Xbox 360 at some point. It's pretty obvious from this demonstration that the interface works and the NXE fits into this interface method. I don't know how Microsoft intends to implement this, probably with some sort of 3d camera aray or something like that. Its probably not going to be much use for games but as a media centre it does make a lot of sense, especially with browsing the content on the machine without having to pick up the controller.

Perhaps at the end of the year we may see all Xbox 360s bundled with 3d cameras, it does make sense for Microsoft to take the interface one step further and perhaps this is what they need to boost sales once again for the 6th holiday season in a row. In any case if its going to arive this year they will probably announce it at E3.

P.S I know its the same thread, but noone seemed to care about it.

Good catch Squill, very interesting indeed. I for one can't wait to find out more!

I wonder if we're going to see a camera array/game bundle ala Wii Sports/Wii Play for $60 come the next E3? I wonder if they will also start to bundle this with every single Xbox 360 SKU permamently? It makes sense because it adds to their media functionality and gives them a unique selling point which is different to what is available on the PS3 (Finally!)

Unfortunately this new information kinda kills my other thread about Wireless!

NO, no they won't.

But if they really do make the 360 work with the 3D camera like in that video, that will be sweet.

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

Interesting. Though I think it will be a long time before it is accepted. It pretty much fantasy becoming reality at this stage. I like the old keyboard and mouse :D

End of 2011 Sales: Wii = 90mil, 360 = 61mil, PS3= 60mil

Looks like it would be a lot quicker to do with a joypad, remote, mouse or wiimote. Tacking on "wave" just to turn up the volume or change a channel doesn't seem very intuitive at all.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

In what bizarre world does the 360 desperately need unique selling points to differentiate itself from the PS3?

Let's look at the term "selling point"... selling... as in, to SELL.  This very website provides plenty of data on console sales.  The 360 already has a unique selling point over the PS3: it sells and the PS3 doesn't.

A camera + game would be different (I'm skeptical of even that), but I'm going to say there's a 0% chance this thing is bundled with every 360 SKU, because Microsoft enjoy making money.

I don't even feel like debating this any further, so I'll just bet that this won't happen and we'll see who is right.  Same goes for the redesigned "slim" 360 with a slot load DVD drive and built-in wireless...

That looks intriguing--I'd like to see them implement it as a standard feature in the Nextbox.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Tag, courtesy of fkusumot: "Why do most of the PS3 fanboys have avatars that looks totally pissed?"
"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

That could be a interesting thing but that interface in the video doesnt lokk like the nxe at all

You know, forums are about arguments and speculation. If you don't feel like debating it with me then you shouldn't have posted! Wow, logic comes swiftly to the rescue.

Why would they do this? One of the limitations for the Xbox 360 as a media centre is that you have to find and pick up a controller to go alongside your TV remote if you want to browse the service. Why not have an intuitive interface that you can use with simple gestures?

The Xbox 360 is coming into its 5th holiday season, it needs something new to keep interest in the machine up and it has to be something which is unique to the machine itself. Going completely hands free is one of the possible next steps to the Wiimote interface and it does open up a few more possibilities for alliances with other consumer electronics or service companies such as TV or Cable companies.
