People do stupid stuff when they get fired and then severance so I would say probably (and know people that got fired and then bought a console).

@twesterm: Nothing stupid about it. It is a straight trade-off between value now versus being able to live a week or two sometime in the future when if you haven't got a job by then you are stuffed anyway.

Meh, it's a judgment call.  Personally, I prefer being able to support myself rather than waster 300+ dollars on a gaming system.  So, yes, I think it's pretty stupid to buy a console when you're unemployed especially since there are much better things you can do with you time like trying to find a job.

I know when I was unemployed for about 2 months trying to find a job was more or less a full time job.  You have to actually look for the jobs, you have to contact people, have to update your resume and cover letter for each different interview, research the company you're applying, if you have any kind of portfolio you have to keep that updated, you want to actually keep busy so if they ask you what you've been doing you don't say well I just bought am Xbox 360!, ect.  Finding a job is a lot of work.

My cousin collects unemployment (which is more money than he got when he actually had a job). And just bought a PS3 and HDTV.
