Forums - Microsoft - Is 360 hate in Japan still because of the war?

Nah, Other Japanese consoles didn't do so well either like Genesis and it had also some games that sold good over there.

Yes, the other day I was at McDonald's in Tokyo and I hear two ipod-wielding Japanese saying how much they hated the 360 because of the war.

Unfortunately then they had to leave to watch The Dark Knight at the cinema, so I couldn't hear the rest of the conversation.

MS Windows dominates in Japan, just like elsewhere, so the do not seem to have a problem with Microsoft products in general.

Possible reasons the XBox cannot catch on in Japan: Not a Japanese company. Too loud. Too bulky. Poor reliability. Lack of Japan focused games (besides RPGs) Perception that Japanese companies make better hardware. Brand loyalty. Portables dominate the market. Perception that it is a western focused console.

Was the 360 to get an exclusive flagship DQ or FF game people here would have a mind fuck when they saw the sales for the 360. It has nothing to do with a war 60 years ago but more to do with games. 360 gets a lot of small JRPG but nothing of substance, all those 360 JRPG in Japan and FFXIII on PS3 will wipe out any increase in sales 360 got due to SO4 or any other JRPG on the console.

If your theory is correct, why does Apple products such as the iPod do so well in Japan?

Japanese people are not holding a grudge, they simply like products which are reliable and don't burn down homes when on for more than an hour. ;)

I guess those Sony laptops aren't doing to well then are they?

Japan is partly a collectivist country, not an individualistic society like the US & EU.  That means they tend to do what is best for the whole--their family, their country.  When you ask an American "Who are you?"  We tend to reply with a name or a career--an individualistic answer.  In most Asian countries, they will reply with something such as "I am Japanese" or "I am the third son of ....."

This is important in understanding Asian countries because they are more likely to support their own products--Not always, but often the case, especially if they feel a foreign product will HURT their own.  Thanks Psychology class & Global Economics!

Another important factor to take into account is that Japanese like reliable hardware.  And the 360 started out pretty rough in that department.  Although, MS has made a lot of improvements, it takes time to freshen a tarnished reputation...and you ARE seeing some improvement in 360 sales now that MS has made improvements pricecuts and games.

I dont know about you but both of those sound like improvements.

He was talking about HW, I think. While it was improved significantly, without the games and the price it wouldn't sell as well.

Yeah I see what you mean now. Also RPG nailed it.

Then that must mean that the US won't buy the PS3 because of Pearl Harbour?

And the reason they did buy the PS2 is because they hadn't realized Sony was Japanese?

It's all coming together now....

/sigh

The 360 is already doing better then the original XBox has done.

Honestly theres not much they can change outside of console reliability, size, and maybe the name? The Izuna Box? Filthy Gajin Box?

It's just that simple.

No. The reason for 360 hate in Japan is actually from the United States-Japan Treaty of Amity and Commerce. The Japanese have never gotten over the unfair and one sided treaty that the US essentially forced Japan to sign 150 years ago, and they have chosen to take out their anger on the 360.

Uh oh, more of this sillyness!
*digs up old post*

Main Japanese X360 exclusives: Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, Infinte Undiscovery, Lost Odyssey, Dead or Alive 4, Ninja Gaiden 2, Star Ocean 4, Blue Dragon 2

Comparable last gen games:
Tales of Rebirth (best selling tales) - 0.59m, Tales of the Abyss (second best tales) - 0.57
Dead or Alive 2 (best selling DoA) - 0.38m
Ninja Gaiden - 0.07m (PS3 version sold 0.09m)
Star Ocean 3 - 0.55m
All other JRPG's not named FF/KH/DQ/MH are below 0.47m.

Main Japanese PS3 exclusives: Hot Shots Golf 5, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4, Yakuza Kenzan, Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza 3, White Knight Chronicles, Final Fantasy XIII/v, Gran Turismo 5

Comparable last gen games:
Hot Shots Golf 3 - 1.39m, Hot Shots Golf 4 - 1.34m
Metal Gear Solid 2 - .87m, Metal Gear Solid 3 - .86m
Gran Turismo 3 - 1.89, Gran Turismo 4 Prologue - 0.79m, Gran Turismo 4 - 1.16
Yakuza 1 - .74m, Yakuza 2 - .75m
Final Fantasy X - 3.02m, Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.41m, Final Fantasy XII - 2.42m

FFXIIIv will most likely place between main FF's and KH, so
Kingdom Hearts 1 - 1.24m, Kingdom Hearts 2 - 1.16m

The 360 games are trumped in popularity by nearly every PS3 exclusive, except Blue Dragon, which is hard to measure. Anyway, Eternal Sonata, a decent sized JRPG, was a timed exclusive for the 360. When the game became availible for PS3 owners (you know, those biased Japanese), the sales showed how little they cared about it. JRPG's are simply not as important as people think they are, and it's all the 360 has.
