Forums - Gaming - Should Microsoft support the DS?

I think Alacrist is overthinking this.

1. Microsoft is not competing in the handheld arena.
2. The DS is already so popular that MS releasing games on the DS won't really help Nintendo too much.
3. Many MS games on the DS will probably sell quite well, making MS money. Viva Pinata is probably one of the best games MS could put on the DS.
4. MS would like to make more money.

Conclusion: MS will publish games for the DS, Viva Pinata first and foremost.

Microsoft is by and large targeting Sony. They want to knock them off their pedestal. If that means teaming up with Nintendo, the company about to overtake them in console hardware sales, in order to smack Sony down a peg in the handheld market.

And honestly, the DS is selling magnificently. Microsoft can make a pretty penny by putting some games on the DS.

PS3: 5.51m/51w, avg 108,039/w (up 239)
360: 12.93m/102w, avg 126,764/w (up 625), leads PS3 by 7.42m (up 70k), avg lead 18,725/w (up 386)
Wii: 13.52m/51w, avg 265,098/w (dn 1,102), leads PS3 by 8.01m (up 90k), avg lead 157,059/w (dn 1,341)

If 360 sales stabilize, PS3 sales increases needed to pass 360 by...
01/08: (008w) +875.8%, 04/08: (021w) +344.4%, 07/08: (034w) +219.3%, 10/08: (047w) +163.5%

If Wii sales stabilize, PS3 sales increases needed to pass Wii by...
01/08: (008w) +1072.%, 04/08: (021w) +498.4%, 07/08: (034w) +363.4%, 10/08: (047w) +303.1%
01/09: (060w) +269.0%, 04/09: (073w) +246.9%, 07/09: (085w) +232.6%, 10/09: (099w) +220.3%
If PS2 sales freeze, Wii sales increases needed to pass PS2 (as of Mar07, 108.4m) by...
2008: (008w) +4373.8%, 2009: (060w) +0496.5%, 2010: (112w) +0219.6%, 2011: (165w) +0116.9%
2012: (217w) +0064.9%, 2013: (269w) +0033.1%, 2014: (321w) +0011.5%, 2015: (376w) -0004.8%
At +0% it will pass it in 358w, the week ending September 19th, 2014, at an age of 409w (7y44w).

Of course MS should support the DS with Rare's casual titles.

It'll allow the fanbase of a given game (like Viva Pinata) to grow, as gamers get a fantastic game. But of course, when VP 2 gets announced, it'll be X360-only. Hopefully MS can pull a succuessful switcharoo and garner more sales for VP2, as VP1 was vastly understold.

Not only this, MS needs the cash :-p Viva Pianta is a million-seller on DS. Lets just hope it winds up doing that + the same for VP2.

I think Mrstickball hit it right on the head... I now actually think he works for Microsoft.

Build a huge fanbase of the Nintendo DS and then release VP 2 on the 360.... it's perfect to attract those casual players.

I think it would help MS and not hurt it so they should bring some of their stuff to the DS.....

I agree with Gebx's agreement with Stick.

I think it is a direct attack on the Japanese market more than anything... Think about it... MS has been trying to get the 360 sold there. Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon... They are trying hard to get support for the console but the Japan market just isn't biting. Now along comes a little title called Viva Pinata for the DS. It sells a million or more copies in Japan inside of 3 months. Microsoft, in a rare moment of Brilliance bundles a 360 with VP and adds downloadable content to allow the DS and 360 VP to work together over Wifi. It'll sell some consoles, certainly, but how many? Regardless, they'll pull down millions on the game along and add yet another reason for a 50K more 360s to end up in Japanese gamer's hands.

Didn't Microsoft have something to do with that Mech Warrior game for DS??

You are correct the game they released was MechAssualt: Phantom War.

I think its great that MS is supporting the DS.  They aren't in the handheld market and they know they can make a profit if they were to release games on the biggest name in the handheld market.

This isn't really news... Rareware games have never been away on the GBA, and it happened before on the DS already... here's a list of Rareware games that were released during the Microsoft era:

- Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge
- Banjo Pilot
- Diddy Kong Racing DS
- Sabre Wulf

Perhaps I forgot a couple...
