Forums - Sony - G4TV: Yahoo is wrong, the PSP is very much alive

G4TV have hit back at an article by Yahoo! Games which indicated that the PSP was nearing its death. However, G4TV highly doubt the PSP has sold very well with an installed base of over 43 million. And on the software side, their 2009 line-up looks impressive with new Final Fantasy Games and Parasite Eve to name a few.

Quote:
The article suggest that it's the end of the line for the PSP, going as far as to ask, "Time to put this gaming warhorse out to pasture?" While Smith cites November North American sales figures to back up his opinion, he doesn't consider the bigger picture -- the North American installed base and global sales figures are never mentioned. I guess it's hard to say that a system is dying when it sold more than four-million units in North America and 3.5-million in Japan during 2008. Never mind that the PSP has a total installed base of more than 43-million.

Then there's the software side. Let's forget that Monster Hunter: Portable 2nd G was the best-selling game across all platforms in Japan during 2008. Apparently "software support is eroding". I guess nobody bothered to tell Square Enix this information. The company's lineup for 2009 looks awesome. You have Dissidia: Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Final Fantasy Agito XIII, and Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday. All four games look fantastic and I have no doubt that at least three of them will sell well over a million copies. Throw in games like Patapon 2, LocoRoco 2, Phantasy Star Portable, Star Ocean: Second Evolution, Resistance: Retribution, and Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero?, and you have quite a lot to be happy about with the PSP in 2009 -- and that's just the announced games!

Of course it's alive and kicking, Yahoo's rubbish isn't even worth discussing. Good on G4TV...

Oh Man As a gamer Life keeps getting better and better I think I might have to invest in a Wii, DS and maybe depending on if Kojima's doing a game for it a 360

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

im with yahoo on this one

Yahoo should worry about their own hide before spelling out doom and gloom for the PSP, my money on Yahoo folding before the PSP is discontinued. The later at least has a significant market share in one major region and is profitable to boot.

Yahoo is not.

that Yahoo article was pure crap, but I'm sure it's spread too far for the true state of affairs to lessen it's impact.

Slightly off-topic, but they say FF Agito XIII in 2009? does that mean FFXIII definately in 2009? sweet.

Not that i wouldn't think the Yahoo article being a little overly negative, but this article seems to be giving a little too rosy picture. The hardware sales aren't bad, but the software sales aren't too good, outside a few bigger hits. The platform is in decline, but then again, due to the loss of 3rd party support, the devs on the platform are able to get decent profits out of it due to lack of competition.

@Spankey

Japan is last shelter for PSP, look at 3rd party games sales: http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=2752 - comparing to other platforms 2008 for PSP outside Japan was really BAD. Looking at future PSP releases hopes still alive though.
