Forums - Nintendo - Wii bubble theorist admits he was wrong, kind of

Last post like this, I swear but it just came to me. "Wii bubble bursting is SO 2008."

Consensus opinion of game "journalists".

2006: The Wii sucks, and it will never sell.
2007: Ok, it is selling, but the bubble will soon burst.
2008: I was wrong about that bubble thing, but the Wii still sucks.

"I misunderstood the market. I did not envision so much of the market choosing a console that had nothing better than Wii Music..."

Gah. He bashes Wii Music, the bravest and most original game this year, and complains that the console couldn't do any better than that. Unless he understands that NO console this year had anything better than that he will continue to misunderstand the market.

Ok, that was a bit overkill. But he BASHED WII MUSIC!

I just want to let some folks know this much: This is actually what professional journalism is, or at least what the mainstream media has degraded down to. Sensationalizing garners more viewers for an article, and bashing something that as of now 46 million people have bought will cause outrage and fury.

If you want to know what it's like, check out Fox News or CNN. Which basically means that it's people like him get paid to get people irritated.

Back to apologizing for my mis-prediction... Since that comment may well have been the swansong of my journalistic career, I wanted to take a moment to explain why I made such a glaring mistake. As I said before, I met the reporter at an event in Seattle. Nintendo had just revealed its summer and fall lineup for Wii which included three highlights: Carnival Games; Big Brain Academy; and Pokemon Battle Revolution. As I recall, they did not let us play Metroid, but we knew it was coming. I took that as a bad sign.

This was mid-June, 2007, and Wii had been out for 18 months. Now in my experience, the 18 month mark was when you started seeing a generation of competent games for new systems, but Nintendo showed us nothing even remotely competent at this event. Well, there was Boogie, from Electronic Arts. That must have tickled some gamers' fancies.

Anyway, after 18 months on the market, Wii inventory was still nowhere near meeting demand; but the only things people were playing on their Wiis were tennis, bowling, and boxing. In other words, they were still playing Wii Sports.

what the hell is this guy on? metroid prime 3 was out within 1 year of wii's release, and there was MKWII, SSBB and SMG in the first 18 months, he really needs to fix his timeline

Indeed, mid-June would represent week 30 for the Wii which is 48 weeks shy of the 18 month mark.  In short the Wii had been out only 6 months and in fact it would be another year, just before June of 2008, before the Wii hit the 18 month mark.  Of course he couldn't have been referring to 2008 either since Boogie was in fact shown in '07 and not '08 and was released in August of 2007.

Wow, what a narrow-minded fool. At least he's not making any more predictions.

So if I understand properly, the Wii had been out for 18 months in June 07?

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

Give the guy a break, I'm sure when forming sentences devoid of logic or reason math is really tough.

Apparently, whiny children can be called "professionals" these days.

unfortunately, sort of how many occupations take it upon themselves to call themselves engineers when they clearly aren't

frankly I can't stand game "journalists" because they aren't, they're simply obsessives that lucked out and happen to get paid to voice their opinion on their favorite toy,

I HAVE A DOUBLE DRAGON CAB IN MY KITCHEN!!!!!!

NOW A PUNISHER CAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are we all sure that this isn't just Bruce in disguise? He may have gotten tired of being ignored and simply pretended to be someone else so that maybe people will listen to his asinine tantrums this time.
