Final Fantasy =/= Dragon Quest

Of course a FF game sold good, it's FF. DQ on the other hand would be much too hard for some 6 year old kid if a parent bought it for them on the Wii, assuming DQX is like every other DQ and is 100 hours worth of grinding. It's not a "blue ocean" type Wii game.

Did you ever even game as a kid? Grinding is what kids do best. I played the shit out of Dragon Warrior I, II, III, Monsters and Monsters II as a kid. WAAAAAAAY to many hours of my life; but the series has been one of my favorites since I was like 10 years old. And FF1 is basically straight grinding; I got into that when I was like 7.

You say that Final Fantasy sold well because "it's FF". Which is exactly what SE is trying to do; establish DQ as the kind of game that sells (much as it does in Japan) simply because it's Dragon Quest. Difficulty and causuality are not the issues here; branding and marketability are.

I agree with this. Dragon Quest is one of the simplest RPG's around - besides the time commitment, it's relatively friendly to the masses, like Pokemon. After all, the series got popular during the NES (the system most similar to the Wii).

Only a few years ago, many people had a very different view of MMORPG's. People thought the monthly subscription model on top of the required time commitments were too much for the average gamer. Then came 2004, the year World of Warcraft arrived, and the game proved everyone wrong.

Sometimes, the market for certain games is far bigger than we think - given the success of Final Fantasy in the west, I think Dragon Quest has a good chance at becoming popular here. I don't think the fact that RPGs take so long to beat will pose much of a problem - LoZ: Twilight Princess is approaching 4mil (GC+Wii) in the Americas alone, and that game takes 40hrs+ to beat.

did they push (i.e. advertised) their games in the US, Europe? just to know really, The World Ends.. IMO is a less mainstream game anyway but if it's not advertised it's even more difficult to sell it...

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

SE, 1 word - Multiplat!

  • 2010 MUST Haves: WKC, Heavy Rain, GoWIII, Fable III, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, Darksiders, FFXIII, Alan Wake, No More Heroes 2, Fragile Dreams: FRotM, Trinity: SoZ, BFBC2.
  • Older Need To Buys: Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Deadspace, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2.

There is definitely more to list that I want, but that's my main focus there.

The big issue for SE is the "worldwide" part. Because aside from Final Fantasy, their bread is buttered in Japan.

Can Square Enix hit it big with a new IP outside of their home country?

This I believe is what they are attempting to do with the Dragon Quest series by putting it on the DS and Wii and with the "advertising" nintendo hinted at it looks like they are going to try to make Dragon Quest as or nearly as popular as FF worldwide. I hope they can cause I love both franchises.

Satoru Iwata is brilliant, the only reason why Dragon Quest is still small here is because Enix didn't bother until the merger, Square was smarter, they made a deal with Sony to massive West marketing and publishing, FF7 became huge because of this and it brought them to the mainstream... Ninty is doing now with DQ what Sony did in the past with FF and worked great...

I'm not sure it can catch on with the Wii masses. Dragon Quest is one of those franchises that probably won't ever be made easier and "casualized" because Japan likes it the way it is. Every one of them is a grind.

Not any more than Pokemon. I'm playing DQIV DS right now and grinding is, in a word, minimal.

They'll get their five million seller when DQIX lands, I'm sure. As for everything else... well, their priorities are just wrong.

Also they ma need to trim some fat and stop producing six FFXIII games at the same time.

what square enix should do is empahzize the multiplayer feature of Dragon quest IX and Crystal chronicles in their commercials. Alot of kids have DS's and the fact that these games allow you to customize your character and play with others could be a big sell. Also these games need commercials SE. Don't expect them to sell if they don't have commercials.

Eh, that's what they get for stabbing Sony in the back like that, right?

It'd be even worse on the PS3 system... if anything it shows WHY they are "stabbing sony in the back."

I would rather say the bad games they made recently.  Last Renmant could have sold a lot better if it ended up being a better game;

ironically the story behind WHY they are "stabbing sony in the back, had causing them badly needed 2-3M sellers.

Well done SE well done!! SE =/= MS

I prefer to side with the lulz to be honest.
